Convert TMDX to PDF

PDF is commonly required when a recipient, print provider, or records system cannot open editable TextMaker documents. Exporting from TextMaker preserves the document’s page layout more reliably than importing it into another word processor first.

Keep the original .tmdx file for future edits; PDF is primarily a fixed-layout distribution and archival format.

What TMDX and PDF files contain

TMDX is the XML-based native document format of TextMaker, the word processor included with SoftMaker Office and FreeOffice. A TMDX file can contain text, styles, tables, images, headers, footnotes, comments, page settings, and other word-processing elements.

TMDX is not Microsoft Word’s DOCX format. Changing document.tmdx to document.docx only changes the filename extension and does not convert the file.

PDF stores pages in a fixed visual form, making it suitable for viewing and printing on Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile devices, and document-management systems. PDF export can embed fonts and preserve pagination, margins, images, and hyperlinks, depending on the export settings and source content.

Export with TextMaker

TextMaker is the preferred converter because it natively opens TMDX files. Current SoftMaker Office or FreeOffice installations can be used; update an older installation if it cannot open a file created by a newer TextMaker release.

1. Open the .tmdx file in TextMaker.
2. Check page breaks, tables, images, headers, and fields before exporting.
3. Select File → Export as PDF.
4. Choose the destination folder and PDF filename.
5. Select available export options for page range, image quality, hyperlinks, font embedding, PDF security, or PDF/A archival output as required.
6. Open the resulting PDF in a PDF viewer and compare it with the source document before distribution.

Use native PDF export instead of a virtual printer where possible. File → Print with Microsoft Print to PDF, macOS Save as PDF, or another PDF printer may flatten or omit interactive features such as hyperlinks, bookmarks, tags, and metadata.

Online conversion options

Online conversion is a fallback, not the first choice for TMDX. Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may offer TMDX input support, but accepted formats can change; confirm that the upload page explicitly accepts .tmdx before sending a file.

1. Open the converter’s TMDX-to-PDF conversion page.
2. Upload the TMDX file and select PDF as the output format.
3. Run the conversion and download the PDF.
4. Review every page, especially tables, custom fonts, footnotes, and images.

Do not upload confidential, regulated, or unpublished documents to a public converter unless its retention, deletion, and data-processing terms meet your requirements.

Layout and compatibility checks

Install the fonts used by the source document before export. Font substitution can change line wrapping, table widths, page breaks, and the total page count; embedding fonts in the PDF reduces differences on the recipient’s device.

Review tracked changes, comments, hidden text, and document fields before creating the final PDF. Accept or reject revisions and remove comments when they must not be visible to the recipient; source-file password protection does not automatically apply to the exported PDF.

For long-term retention, select a PDF/A option if TextMaker provides one and the receiving archive specifies a required PDF/A variant. PDF/A restrictions can affect transparency, encryption, and unsupported embedded content, so validate the exported file against the archive’s requirements.
