Convert SNP to PDF

A legacy Microsoft Access report in .snp format may need conversion when recipients lack the old Snapshot Viewer or when a records system accepts PDF only. Printing the snapshot to PDF preserves its paginated appearance for sharing, printing, and archiving.

What the SNP format is

In this context, .snp means a Microsoft Access Snapshot file. Older Access versions created snapshots from database reports so people could view and print a fixed report without opening the database or editing its queries and controls.

An Access Snapshot is a proprietary, rendered report file. It can contain formatted text, page layout, graphics, and images; it is not simply an image, an editable Word document, or a complete .mdb or .accdb database. Snapshot files are associated mainly with Access 2000–2003-era workflows and were opened with Microsoft Snapshot Viewer for Access.

The extension can also belong to unrelated application-specific files. A genetics file containing single-nucleotide polymorphism data is not an Access Snapshot and must be opened in the originating scientific software before its results are exported or printed to PDF.

What the PDF format provides

PDF is a page-description format that preserves page size, pagination, fonts, text placement, graphics, and images across operating systems. Most recipients need only a standard PDF viewer, and PDF is supported by printers, document-management systems, and many archival workflows.

A PDF made from an Access Snapshot is a static presentation of the report. It does not preserve database tables, queries, relationships, report controls, or the ability to refresh the report with new data.

How to convert an Access SNP file

The most reliable method is to open the file in Microsoft Snapshot Viewer for Access and print it through a PDF printer.

1. Make a backup copy of the original .snp file.
2. Install Snapshot Viewer only from a trusted Microsoft archive, an existing organizational software repository, or approved legacy software media. It is discontinued software, so verify that installation is allowed and scan the installer.
3. Open the file in Snapshot Viewer. If Windows has no file association, right-click the file, choose Open with, and select the viewer.
4. Choose File → Print or the printer button.
5. Select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, or another installed PDF printer such as Adobe PDF.
6. Set the page range, paper size, orientation, and scaling. Use the report’s original paper size where possible.
7. Print to a new .pdf file, then open it and check page count, page breaks, clipped columns, fonts, images, and text selection.

If Snapshot Viewer will not run on a current computer, use an approved isolated or virtualized legacy Windows environment rather than installing unknown conversion utilities. Renaming .snp to .pdf does not convert the file.

When the original Access database is available

If the source .mdb or .accdb file exists, regenerate the report in Microsoft Access and export it directly. Open the database, run the report, and select External Data → PDF or XPS or File → Export → PDF or XPS, depending on the Access version.

Direct export usually produces a cleaner PDF and avoids the discontinued viewer, but it may show current database records instead of the historical values captured in the SNP file. Use the original snapshot when historical accuracy matters.

Online converters and compatibility limits

Major online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar do not consistently list Microsoft Access Snapshot as a supported input format. Do not upload an SNP file merely because a service accepts similarly named extensions, and do not trust a service that instructs you to change the extension first. If a reputable service explicitly supports Access Snapshot conversion, verify the output and review its retention and privacy terms before uploading a confidential report.

• Snapshot Viewer may be unavailable, incompatible with current Windows releases, or blocked by organizational security policy.
• Printing reproduces the layout rendered by the viewer; it cannot restore missing fonts, images, or printer-dependent formatting.
• A print-generated PDF can contain selectable text, but it is still not an editable Access report. OCR is needed only when the output contains image-only pages or unusable text.
• Incorrect paper size or scaling can add pages, change breaks, or cut off wide report columns.
• For archival or accessibility requirements, check font embedding, text extraction, bookmarks, tags, screen-reader behavior, and PDF/A compliance. A PDF printer does not guarantee tagged PDF or PDF/A output.
