Convert FR3 to PDF

A PDF is required when a FastReport output must be printed, shared, archived, or viewed without the original reporting application and data connection. Converting the template alone may not produce a complete document because an FR3 file can depend on external data, images, fonts, and scripts.

What the FR3 format is

FR3 is the report-template format used mainly by FastReport VCL and compatible FastReport Studio installations. It stores report bands, fields, expressions, formatting, page settings, images, objects, and sometimes scripts. An FR3 file often does not contain the database records needed to render the final report.

FR3 files are commonly used in Delphi and C++Builder applications for invoices, labels, forms, statements, and operational reports. FastReport .NET generally uses the .frx extension instead, so the product and version that created the file matter.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a rendered document format that preserves page size, pagination, positioning, graphics, and, depending on the export settings, searchable text and embedded fonts. It can be opened and printed on most systems without FastReport or access to the original database.

PDF is an output format, not an editable replacement for the FR3 template. It does not retain the report’s database bindings, expressions, design layout, or runtime parameters in an editable form.

How to convert an FR3 file to PDF

Using the original FastReport application

1. Open the file in the application that created it, or in a compatible FastReport VCL designer or FastReport Studio installation.
2. Provide any required database connection, report parameters, input values, external images, and script dependencies.
3. Preview the report and check records, totals, images, page breaks, paper size, orientation, and margins.
4. Use the application’s PDF export command, commonly File → Export → PDF, or select the PDF export button.
5. Choose a filename such as report.pdf and configure available options for image compression, font embedding, metadata, bookmarks, or PDF/A.

The exact menu names and export filters depend on the FastReport product, version, and installed components. A designer that can edit FR3 files may not include every runtime export filter; the original business application is usually the most reliable renderer.

Using print to PDF

If the FastReport application can preview or print the report but has no PDF export filter, choose File → Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, or a comparable PDF printer supplied by the operating system. This converts the rendered pages rather than the FR3 template.

Print-to-PDF can lose export-specific features such as bookmarks, tagged structure, metadata controls, PDF/A compliance, and selectable text quality. Confirm that the selected printer paper size and scaling are correct; otherwise objects may be clipped or page breaks may change.

Online conversion options

General online converters such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should not be assumed to support FR3 reliably. FR3 rendering usually requires FastReport-compatible software plus the report’s data sources, scripts, external files, and fonts, and those services may not provide them.

There is no broadly reliable online FR3-to-PDF service for arbitrary FastReport templates. If a service specifically claims FR3 support, verify the supported FastReport version and whether it can supply the report’s dependencies before uploading a file. Do not upload confidential templates or data to an unverified service; use the original application or an isolated desktop installation instead.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• A template without its database, connection settings, parameters, scripts, images, or runtime configuration may open but produce an empty, partial, or incorrect PDF.
• Install the fonts used by the report before rendering. Font substitution can change line wrapping, object positions, totals, and pagination; enable font embedding when the exporter supports it and licensing permits it.
• FastReport product families and major versions are not fully interchangeable. If the file fails to open or renders differently, use the same generation of FastReport or the application that created the file.
• Compare the PDF with the application preview, especially barcodes, images, overflow text, page headers and footers, totals, and repeated bands.
• Keep the original FR3 file and its data and configuration files when future editing or regeneration is required. The PDF preserves the rendered appearance, not the report’s editable structure.
