Legacy accounting, reporting, and spreadsheet programs may produce .slk files that recipients cannot open easily, while printers, archives, and document systems commonly require PDF. Converting the sheet creates a fixed-layout copy that can be viewed and printed without spreadsheet software.

What the SLK format is

SLK, also called SYLK or Symbolic Link, is a text-based spreadsheet interchange format introduced by Microsoft for Multiplan and later supported by Excel and other spreadsheet applications. An .slk file stores records describing cell values, formulas, formatting references, and worksheet metadata; common record types include ID, C, and E. The format is now mostly encountered in files exported by older accounting, database, reporting, and spreadsheet systems.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed to display pages consistently across operating systems and applications. It is useful for sharing reports, printing worksheets, and archiving a visual record because recipients do not need the original spreadsheet program. PDF does not retain the workbook as an editable grid: formulas, cell relationships, filters, and most spreadsheet behavior are represented only by their rendered results.

How to convert an SLK file to PDF

Using LibreOffice Calc

1. Open the .slk file in LibreOffice Calc with File → Open. Calc should identify it as a SYLK spreadsheet; accept the detected format in any import dialog.
2. Check cell values, formulas, dates, currency formats, column widths, worksheet names, merged cells, and non-ASCII characters. Save an intermediate .ods file if you need to preserve an editable copy.
3. Set the page size, orientation, margins, scaling, print range, and page breaks through Format → Page Style and the print-preview controls. For wide sheets, landscape orientation or a defined print area may produce a more readable result.
4. Export the workbook with File → Export as PDF or the PDF toolbar button, choose a filename such as report.pdf, and save it.
5. Open the resulting PDF and inspect every page for clipped columns, unexpected blank pages, unreadable scaling, and missing worksheets.

LibreOffice can also convert a file from a terminal:

The command writes the PDF to output. Its page breaks and scaling still depend on the spreadsheet’s print configuration, so inspect the output rather than relying on the command’s completion status.

Using Microsoft Excel

1. Open Excel and choose File → Open, then select the .slk file. If Excel displays a format or security warning, confirm that the file came from a trusted source and allow it to open as a SYLK file.
2. Review the imported workbook and correct page layout settings under Page Layout, including orientation, paper size, margins, scaling, print area, and repeating print titles.
3. Choose File → Export → Create PDF/XPS or File → Save As, select PDF, choose the active sheet or entire workbook as appropriate, and save the file.

Excel and LibreOffice may interpret older SYLK features differently. LibreOffice is a free desktop option; Excel can be preferable when the source file depends on Excel-specific formatting or formulas.

Quality and compatibility limits

• SYLK is an old interchange format, so modern software may not reconstruct every original feature. Verify formulas, dates, decimal and currency formatting, hidden rows or columns, merged cells, text encoding, and sheet dimensions.
• PDF export captures printed output, not the raw cell grid. A wide worksheet can be split across pages or scaled until its text is difficult to read; adjust orientation, scaling, margins, print area, and page breaks before exporting.
• For workbooks with multiple sheets, confirm that the export includes all required sheets rather than only the active sheet.
• Keep the original .slk file and, when editing may be required later, an editable .ods or .xlsx copy. The PDF is a presentation or archival copy, not a substitute for the source workbook.
