Convert PZF to PDF

A recipient without GraphPad Prism may need a PZF project as a portable document for review, printing, submission, or archiving. Exporting it to PDF preserves the visible graphs and layouts without requiring Prism to view the result.

What the PZF format is

.pzf is a proprietary GraphPad Prism project format used by older Prism releases and still encountered in archived research files. Researchers and statisticians use Prism projects to store data tables, statistical analyses, graphs, page layouts, and project notes; a PZF file is therefore more than a single image or page.

PZF compatibility depends on the Prism version that created the file and the version used to open it. A current Prism release may open an older PZF project, but some files require the original or an intermediate Prism version before they can be resaved or exported.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores rendered pages in a fixed layout that is consistent across operating systems and common viewers. It is suitable for sharing, printing, publication drafts, regulatory records, and archival reference.

Direct Prism export can preserve selectable text and vector graph elements, including lines and shapes. PDF does not retain Prism's editable data tables, analysis settings, or project structure as native objects, so the original PZF file must be retained when further analysis may be required.

How to convert a PZF file to PDF

Using GraphPad Prism

1. Install GraphPad Prism for Windows or macOS, using a version that supports the file. Open Prism and choose File → Open, then select the .pzf file.
2. Inspect the opened project for missing fonts, substituted symbols, broken references, incomplete graphs, and changed page layouts. If Prism cannot open it, try the version that created the file or an intermediate release, if available.
3. To export one graph or layout, select that sheet and choose File → Export. Select PDF, set the page, size, and orientation options offered by Prism, and save the file.
4. For several graphs, first arrange the required graphs on Prism layouts or export them individually. To create a PDF containing printable project pages, choose File → Print and select a PDF destination such as Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or Save as PDF on macOS; set the required page range before saving.
5. Open the PDF in a viewer and check every page at its intended print size. Verify axis labels, legends, superscripts, special symbols, image placement, page breaks, and font substitutions.

Direct export is preferable to screenshots because it can retain vector graphics and selectable text. Exporting or printing does not convert the project into an editable PDF; it creates a representation of the pages Prism renders.

Online conversion options

Generic online converters are not a dependable option for PZF files. Most do not parse GraphPad Prism's proprietary project structure and may reject the extension, process only an embedded preview, or omit tables, analyses, and layouts. Use an online service only if it explicitly supports GraphPad Prism PZF files and states how uploaded files are stored and deleted. Do not upload confidential research, patient information, unpublished results, or identifiable data unless the service has been approved for that data.

Quality and compatibility limits

The PDF contains only the pages selected, exported, or printed; it does not automatically expose every data table or analysis in the project. Keep the original PZF file and record the Prism version used for the conversion.

Page settings can scale a large graph or alter its placement. Raster images embedded in a layout retain their source resolution and may print poorly if the source is small. Missing fonts can change label wrapping, symbols, and superscript appearance. If a project cannot be opened, ask the sender to export the required graphs and layouts from Prism or to resave the project in a format supported by the available Prism version.
