What the .textclipping format is

.textclipping is a macOS Finder file created when a user drags selected text from an application to the desktop or another Finder folder. It is mainly used to save and reuse short text fragments. The clipping can contain plain text or rich-text data, including some fonts, colors, and basic formatting supplied by the source application.

Mac applications such as TextEdit, Safari, Mail, Notes, and other text-capable software can create or read clippings. A PDF is generally easier to submit, email, print, and archive than a .textclipping file. Text produced through TextEdit normally remains selectable and searchable, but the PDF is primarily a presentation copy rather than a convenient source for continued editing.

How to convert it on macOS

1. Make a copy of the original .textclipping file if the source must remain unchanged.
2. In Finder, Control-click the file and choose Open With → TextEdit. If TextEdit is not offered, open TextEdit and drag the clipping into a new document. You can also double-click the clipping, copy its contents, and paste them into TextEdit.
3. Inspect the imported text, line breaks, characters, fonts, images, and formatting. If required, adjust the document before exporting. Use File → Page Setup for paper size and orientation where available.
4. Choose File → Print. In the macOS print dialog, open the PDF menu in the lower-left corner and select Save as PDF.
5. Enter a filename ending in .pdf, choose a destination, and click Save.

Some macOS versions or applications provide File → Export as PDF; that option can be used instead. Printing to PDF is usually the most consistently available method because macOS renders the document before saving it. For more control over margins, page breaks, and layout, paste the content into Pages and use File → Export To → PDF.

A clipping that contains only unsupported content may produce little or no usable text.

Check the PDF at its intended paper size and confirm that text is selectable and searchable. If exact visual reproduction is required, compare the PDF with the original source application and embed or replace fonts as needed. A standard macOS print-to-PDF file is not automatically PDF/A-compliant; create and validate PDF/A separately when an archive requires that profile.
