How to convert pfile to pdf file

To convert a .pfile (often referring to protected files or files associated with certain specialized software) to a PDF, follow these steps:

Identify the source of the pfile

Determine the origin of the .pfile to understand the type of protection or format it is in. Commonly, .pfile refers to files protected by Microsoft Azure Information Protection (AIP).

Use appropriate software

  • If it is protected by AIP, you will need the Microsoft Purview Information Protection Viewer to open and view the contents of the .pfile. This client runs on Windows only and replaces the Azure Information Protection (AIP) unified labeling client.
  • If it’s from another source, ensure you have the correct application to open it.
  1. Open the pfile:
    • Launch the Azure Information Protection Viewer or the required software.
    • Open the .pfile by selecting it within the software.
  2. Print to PDF:
    • Once the file is open, choose the option to print the file.
    • Select a PDF printer (such as Microsoft Print to PDF) as your printer option.
    • Click Print, and you’ll be prompted to save the file as a PDF.
  3. Check the PDF File:
    • Locate the newly saved PDF file on your computer.
    • Open the PDF to ensure that the content has been accurately converted.

If the .pfile is from another specialized software, the process may differ slightly based on the application used.

Understanding pfile and pdf file formats

PFILE is a proprietary file format used by Microsoft Azure Information Protection (AIP) to protect sensitive documents. Files with the .pfile extension are encrypted and can only be opened by users with the appropriate permissions and the Azure Information Protection client installed.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a widely used file format developed by Adobe for presenting documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, or operating systems. PDF files are commonly used for sharing read-only documents that preserve the layout of a page.

How to convert pfile to pdf

Converting a PFILE to PDF involves first removing the protection from the PFILE, then saving or exporting the resulting document as a PDF. This process requires that you have the necessary permissions to open and unprotect the PFILE.

  1. Open the PFILE using the Azure Information Protection Viewer or the application associated with the original file type (e.g., Microsoft Word for .docx.pfile).
  2. Authenticate with your Microsoft account if prompted, to gain access to the protected content.
  3. Save or export the file to its original format (e.g., .docx, .xlsx, .pptx) using the application's File → Save As option.
  4. Open the unprotected file in its native application (e.g., Microsoft Word).
  5. Export or save as PDF by selecting File → Export → Create PDF/XPS Document or File → Save As and choosing PDF as the file type.
