How to convert pmt to pdf file

Older Adobe PageMaker templates often need conversion when a finished layout must be shared, printed, or archived on computers without PageMaker. PDF preserves the completed page layout and can be viewed with common software, but the original PMT file must be opened and exported; changing its extension does not convert it.

What the PMT format is

A .pmt file is primarily an Adobe PageMaker template. It can contain reusable layout elements such as page dimensions, master pages, text frames, styles, and graphics placement for brochures, newsletters, flyers, and similar publications. Opening a template usually creates a new publication based on it rather than treating the template as the finished document.

The extension is not a universal format identifier. Another application may use .pmt for an unrelated file type, so confirm that the file came from PageMaker before selecting a conversion method. File-extension checks alone cannot identify the internal format reliably.

What PDF provides

PDF preserves page size, text positioning, vector artwork, and raster images for consistent viewing and printing across operating systems. It is suitable for sending a finished publication to a printer, attaching it to email, and archiving it without requiring PageMaker.

PDF is usually a final-output format, not a replacement for an editable layout file. Keep the original PMT, the resulting PageMaker publication, linked graphics, and licensed fonts if further design changes may be needed.

Convert with PageMaker

  1. Make a working copy of the PMT file. Gather its linked images and identify the fonts it uses.
  2. Open the copy in Adobe PageMaker, preferably PageMaker 7, the final major desktop release. Allow the template to create a new publication, then save that publication under a different filename.
  3. Resolve missing fonts and links, inspect master pages and overset text, and confirm page size, margins, colors, and image placement.
  4. Use File → Export → Adobe PDF if the installation includes PageMaker's PDF export plug-in and the required Acrobat components. Select the page range, image resolution, color settings, bleed, and an appropriate PDF preset.
  5. If PDF export is unavailable, use File → Print to create a PostScript file with a PostScript-capable printer or print-to-file driver. Open the resulting .ps file in Adobe Acrobat Distiller and choose the printer's required PDF settings.
  6. Open the PDF in a current viewer and inspect every page, including text, images, page size, fonts, colors, and bleed.

PageMaker and its original PDF workflow are discontinued. Modern operating systems may not run them correctly, so a licensed legacy computer or supported virtual machine may be required. PageMaker files can sometimes be opened by older Adobe InDesign releases that include the PageMaker import capability, but current InDesign should not be expected to open PMT files. If an older InDesign installation opens the template, save the result as an InDesign document or PDF and check the layout carefully.

Online conversion options

Most mainstream online converters do not interpret Adobe PageMaker templates. Services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert should be used only if their current format list explicitly accepts Adobe PageMaker PMT and a test conversion preserves the layout. A site that accepts the upload under a generic document category may merely rename the file, reject it, or produce an unusable result.

Do not upload confidential publications, customer information, unpublished work, or copyrighted material to an unverified service. For a genuine PMT file, local conversion through PageMaker, an appropriate legacy InDesign installation, or a controlled virtual machine is generally safer and more predictable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Missing or substituted fonts can change line breaks, text flow, and pagination. Install the original fonts where their licenses permit, and check the exported PDF for font substitution and overset text.

PageMaker links to many graphics rather than embedding them in the template. Missing source images can produce blank, outdated, or low-resolution output. Preserve the original linked files and verify their effective resolution before export.

Direct PDF export generally retains more document structure and searchable text than printing through a basic PDF printer. PostScript and Distiller workflows can alter transparency, color handling, overprint, or font behavior. For commercial printing, use the printer's specified PDF preset and verify bleed, crop marks, CMYK conversion, overprint, and image resolution.

Keep the PMT and the converted PDF together: the PDF is the portable presentation file, while the PMT and its associated assets are needed to reconstruct or edit the layout.
