How to convert pdx to pdf file

People usually need a PDF from a PDX file to share, print, archive, or open it on a system without the original PDX software. The correct method depends on which application created the file, because .pdx is used by unrelated formats and is not a single standardized document type.

What the PDX format is

PDX is an ambiguous file extension. Two significant uses are Adobe Acrobat Catalog indexes and Mayura Draw drawings.

Legacy Adobe Acrobat Catalog created .pdx index files for collections of PDF documents. An index contains search data and references to source files; it does not contain the pages, images, or complete text of those documents. It cannot be converted into a complete PDF by changing the extension or submitting it to a generic converter.

Mayura Draw uses PDX as a native drawing format for vector illustrations and technical artwork. Mayura Draw users can open the drawing in the application and export or print it as PDF. Other specialist programs may also use .pdx for unrelated data, so the extension alone does not identify the format.

Check the file's original folder, sender, companion files, and associated application before converting it. On Windows, use Open with; on macOS, use Finder's Get Info. Do not upload an unidentified or confidential PDX file to a cloud service.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format that can preserve layout, fonts, vector graphics, raster images, colors, and print settings across operating systems. PDF files can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader, web browsers, and other PDF viewers without installing the software that created the source.

Native PDF export can retain searchable text, vector artwork, bookmarks, links, layers, form fields, tags, and other document features. Printing to PDF preserves the visible page but may discard many of those features.

How to convert a Mayura Draw PDX file

  1. Install a compatible version of Mayura Draw and open the .pdx file. If the file was created by a different program, do not use Mayura Draw merely because the extension matches.
  2. Use Mayura Draw's PDF export or save command, such as File → Export → PDF or File → Save As, depending on the version. Select the page size, orientation, scale, and output location.
  3. Enable options for embedded fonts, vector output, crop marks, bleed, or high-resolution raster images when the drawing requires them. Keep the original PDX file because PDF export is not a reversible format conversion.
  4. Open the resulting PDF and check page dimensions, line weights, colors, text selection, image resolution, and clipping. For print production, confirm the required color profile and bleed with the printer.

If Mayura Draw cannot export PDF in the installed version, use File → Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or the built-in PDF output on macOS. A PDF printer captures the rendered page, so it may omit editable objects, layers, hyperlinks, and metadata that native export could preserve.

How to handle an Adobe Catalog PDX file

  1. Find the PDF collection referenced by the index. The source files may be in the same folder, a subfolder, a network location, or an external archive.
  2. Open the source PDFs in Acrobat or another PDF viewer. The .pdx file is only an index and is not the document to convert.
  3. For one source PDF, use File → Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF or macOS PDF output only if a new copy is required. If the source is already a PDF, copying or exporting it directly normally preserves more information.
  4. To combine several source PDFs, use Adobe Acrobat Pro's File → Combine Files or an equivalent PDF-merging tool. Review the order, page count, bookmarks, links, and security settings after combining.
  5. If the index points to editable source files instead of PDFs, open those files in their original applications and use their native File → Export or File → Print PDF command.

If the indexed PDFs are missing, the PDX index cannot reconstruct them. Recovery requires locating the original collection, restoring it from backup, or obtaining it from the source. A hex editor, file-renaming utility, or generic converter cannot create missing document pages from index data.

When another program created the PDX file

  1. Identify the creating program from the sender, original computer, installation records, or neighboring files. PDX variants from different programs are not interchangeable.
  2. Open the file in that program and look for File → Export → PDF, File → Save As, or File → Print. Use native PDF export when available.
  3. If the program has no PDF export, print through Microsoft Print to PDF, macOS PDF output, or a desktop PDF printer such as PDFCreator. Confirm that the printer is configured for the required paper size and resolution.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Zamzar are established general-purpose conversion services, but PDX support is variant-specific and may be absent. Use an online service only when its current supported-format list explicitly identifies the application or PDX variant that created the file; a service that accepts the extension may still produce an unusable result. Do not upload legal, financial, medical, personal, or proprietary files unless the service and your organization permit cloud processing.

Quality and compatibility limits

Native export is preferable for vector drawings, searchable documents, forms, annotations, bookmarks, accessibility tags, layers, embedded files, and hyperlinks. Print-to-PDF can flatten these elements, convert text to outlines or raster output, remove metadata, alter transparency, and reduce image quality.

After conversion, verify the PDF in more than one viewer and inspect fonts, selectable text, images, page size, orientation, transparency, hyperlinks, and print output. If the PDX is an Adobe Catalog index with no available source documents, there is no direct PDX-to-PDF conversion that can recover the indexed content.
