People convert Evernote exports to PDF when notes must be printed, shared with recipients who do not use Evernote, or stored in a fixed-layout archive. PDF can be opened with standard viewers, while the original .enex file remains available for future import and editing.

What the ENEX format is

ENEX is Evernote’s XML-based export format. It can contain one or more notes, titles, formatted content, tags, dates, source URLs, images, audio, PDFs, and other attached files. Evernote creates ENEX files through File → Export; users commonly use them to back up notes, move content between accounts, or migrate to another note-taking application.

ENEX is an export container, not a complete Evernote database and not a page-layout document. It does not preserve every account, notebook, synchronization, revision-history, or application-specific feature. Opening an ENEX file directly in a browser, word processor, or PDF viewer will not reliably produce the notes as readable pages.

What the PDF format provides

PDF stores rendered pages so the document generally retains the same appearance across operating systems, viewers, and printers. It is suitable for printing, emailing, records systems, and sharing without Evernote or an ENEX importer. Text is normally selectable and searchable when the source note contains text, but PDF does not retain Evernote’s editable note structure, tags as application metadata, synchronization state, or revision history.

Convert ENEX with Evernote

1. Open Evernote Desktop for Windows or macOS and sign in if the application requires it.
2. Import the export through the version’s ENEX command, usually File → Import → Evernote Export Files on Windows or File → Import Notes on macOS. Select the .enex file and enable tag import when that option is available.
3. Choose an import notebook or destination if Evernote prompts for one. Some versions create an import notebook automatically.
4. Open several imported notes and verify text, images, tables, checklists, links, and attachments.
5. Select a note, or select multiple notes if the installed version supports batch export. Use the PDF command, commonly File → Export Note → Export as PDF or an equivalent note menu.
6. If direct PDF export is unavailable, use File → Print, then choose Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows or Save as PDF in the macOS print dialog. Set the page size, orientation, margins, and output location.
7. Open the resulting .pdf and check page breaks, image placement, links, and the number of exported notes.

Evernote menu names and multi-note export behavior vary by version. If one PDF cannot contain the selected notes, export or print them separately. For a large export, process smaller groups and keep the original ENEX file unchanged.

Joplin can import many ENEX exports through File → Import → ENEX. After reviewing the imported notes, print them to a PDF printer. Joplin converts content through its own Markdown and HTML handling, so fonts, tables, checkboxes, indentation, internal links, and complex layouts may differ more from the Evernote view than they do in Evernote’s own export.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Keep the ENEX file. PDF is a rendered copy, not a replacement for the editable Evernote export.
• Basic text and images usually convert well, while nested lists, complex tables, custom fonts, code blocks, handwriting, checkboxes, and unusual layouts may reflow or change.
• Audio, video, and arbitrary attachments cannot become playable PDF content. They may appear as filenames, icons, links, or separate attachments, or be omitted by a converter that renders only note content. Preserve required files separately.
• Encrypted note content may need to be unlocked in Evernote before it can be rendered.
• Long notes and high-resolution images can produce large PDFs. Lower print or image quality only when a smaller file is more important than visual fidelity.
• Review internal note links, page breaks, image resolution, tables, and attachment indicators in the finished PDF. PDF preserves appearance, not Evernote metadata or editing behavior.
