How to convert rvf to pdf file

Recipients, records systems, and publishing workflows often accept PDF but not the application-specific RVF format. Converting the file produces a fixed-layout copy that can be shared, printed, or archived without the original RVF application.

What the RVF format is

For documents, RVF means RichView Format, the native format associated with the TRichView rich-text component suite for Delphi and C++Builder. Depending on the creating application, an RVF file can contain formatted text, images, tables, hyperlinks, lists, and other rich-document elements.

RVF files usually come from a custom Windows business application, a Delphi or C++Builder program built with TRichView, or an RVF editor distributed with such software. RVF is not RTF and is not a broadly supported interchange format; the program that created the file may use application-specific objects or fields that other readers cannot interpret.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that preserves page dimensions, positioning, fonts, images, and print appearance across operating systems. It is commonly accepted for submission, emailing, printing, document management, and archiving.

Conversion normally preserves the document’s visible appearance rather than its original editable structure. Application-specific controls, hidden content, form behavior, metadata, bookmarks, and some hyperlink features may be lost.

How to convert RVF to PDF

Use the program that created the RVF file whenever possible. It is most likely to understand embedded objects, custom fields, and the file’s exact formatting.

  1. Make a backup copy of the .rvf file and open the copy in the original application, its supplied RVF Editor, or another compatible TRichView-based program.
  2. Check the document for missing fonts, images, tables, special characters, headers, footers, and unexpected page breaks.
  3. If the program has PDF output, use its PDF or export command, such as File → Export → PDF. Set page size, orientation, margins, image resolution, and font embedding when those options are available. TRichView is a developer component suite, not a universal end-user converter, so PDF output depends on the application built with it and any PDF components that application includes.
  4. If direct PDF output is unavailable, use File → Print. On Windows, select Microsoft Print to PDF; on macOS, select PDF → Save as PDF in the print dialog. A reputable PDF printer such as PDF24 Creator is another option on supported Windows systems.
  5. Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and inspect every page, including text selection, images, hyperlinks, page breaks, special characters, headers, and footers.

If the original application is unavailable, a compatible RVF Editor may open the file, but success depends on the RVF features used by the creator. Ask the sender to export the document from the original application when the file contains custom controls, embedded objects, or formatting that the editor cannot reproduce.

There is no broadly reliable online converter for arbitrary RVF files. Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should be used only if their current format list explicitly includes RVF and a non-confidential test file converts correctly. Do not rename .rvf to .pdf; changing the extension does not change the file format. Avoid uploading confidential documents to an online service.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Native PDF export, when provided by the creating application, may retain selectable text, links, and document information more effectively than a print path. Printing to PDF is often dependable for visual fidelity, but it captures the rendered pages and may omit editable elements, bookmarks, metadata, hidden content, or interactive behavior.

Install the fonts used by the RVF document before exporting. Substitute fonts can alter character appearance, line wrapping, and pagination. Review documents with embedded controls or custom objects in the original application because third-party RVF readers may display them incorrectly or omit them.
