HTML is useful when notes must be opened in a browser, edited in a standard web editor, or shared without requiring Evernote. Converting an ENEX export also makes note content easier to archive and inspect as ordinary files.

What the ENEX format is

ENEX is Evernote's XML-based export format. Evernote creates it when you export notes or notebooks for backup, transfer, or import into another Evernote account. An ENEX file can contain note titles, timestamps, tags, notebooks, ENML note bodies, and attached resources such as images, PDFs, and audio files.

The note body is stored inside XML, commonly as CDATA containing ENML, an Evernote-specific HTML-like format. ENML may include Evernote tags and resource references that a normal web browser does not interpret directly.

What the HTML format is

HTML stores structured content that browsers, web editors, content-management systems, and many document tools can open. It is suitable for publishing or editing note text, headings, lists, links, tables, and images without Evernote.

HTML conversion does not necessarily produce one self-contained file. Images and other attachments may be extracted into a separate folder, embedded as data, linked to their original files, or omitted depending on the converter.

Quality and compatibility limits

Basic note text, formatting, links, lists, and many images usually transfer well. Evernote-specific features such as reminders, note history, encryption, saved searches, handwriting, annotations, internal links, and notebook metadata may be flattened, discarded, or represented as ordinary HTML.

When the output contains broken image links, keep the downloaded HTML file with its resource folder and do not rename either without updating the links. If the converter creates one HTML file per note, preserve the generated filenames and folder structure. Review the result for private content and embedded attachments before publishing it.
