How to convert odt to html file

A website, content-management system, browser editor, or publishing workflow may require HTML instead of an editable OpenDocument file. Converting the document makes its content viewable in browsers and easier to embed or edit with web tools.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format, an XML-based word-processing format standardized by OASIS. LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications use it; Microsoft Word can open and save ODT files, although some layout features may change.

An ODT file can contain formatted text, styles, tables, images, page settings, footnotes, headers, and embedded objects. It is normally a ZIP package containing XML documents and resources, so it is designed for editing in a word processor rather than direct display in a browser.

What the HTML format is

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) structures content for web browsers. Its elements represent headings, paragraphs, lists, links, tables, images, and other document content. CSS may be included or linked separately to control appearance.

HTML is useful for publishing an ODT document on a website, importing it into a CMS, displaying it in an application, or editing it with a browser-based tool. A conversion can produce an HTML file together with a folder containing extracted images or other resources.

How to convert an ODT file to HTML

LibreOffice Writer is the most practical desktop option because it is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Open the .odt file in LibreOffice Writer.
  2. Choose File → Save As.
  3. Select HTML Document (.html) or the equivalent HTML file type in the format list.
  4. Choose the destination and filename, then select Save. Confirm the format warning if LibreOffice displays one.
  5. Open the resulting HTML file in a browser and check headings, lists, tables, links, and images.

Some LibreOffice versions also provide an HTML export command under File. Use the standard HTML option for current web content; HTML 3.2 is an older compatibility option with fewer features.

If images are exported into a companion folder, keep that folder beside the HTML file. Moving only the HTML file can break its relative image paths.

Batch conversion from the command line

LibreOffice can convert files without opening its graphical interface:

soffice --headless --convert-to html --outdir output document.odt

Replace output with an existing destination directory and document.odt with the input filename. The output can include a companion resource folder. When running several conversions at once, use separate temporary LibreOffice profiles to avoid profile-lock conflicts.

Conversion without installing software

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the ODT file, select HTML as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential documents unless the service's current privacy and retention terms meet your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Page layout: HTML uses a flow-based browser layout, so fixed margins, page breaks, columns, headers, and footers may be simplified or represented with CSS. It will not preserve page appearance as reliably as PDF.
  • Fonts: The browser must have the selected fonts or suitable web fonts. Font substitution can change line wrapping and element sizes.
  • Images: Confirm that image files were exported and that the HTML contains correct relative paths. Keep linked resources in their expected locations.
  • Styles: Named paragraph and character styles usually convert more consistently than manually applied formatting, but LibreOffice may generate verbose, application-specific CSS.
  • Complex content: Basic tables usually convert well. Spreadsheets, charts, macros, embedded documents, tracked changes, and complex drawing objects may be flattened, omitted, or rendered differently.
  • Publishing security: Inspect the generated source before publishing. Remove unwanted metadata, comments, external links, and embedded content; sanitize the HTML before inserting it into a web application.
