APKG files are Anki deck packages, while HTML is easier to open in browsers, publish on a website, and edit with standard web tools. Converting is useful when the recipient does not use Anki or when flashcard content must be archived as browsable documents.

What the APKG format is

APKG is Anki's packaged deck format. An APKG file is normally a ZIP archive containing an Anki SQLite database, usually collection.anki2, plus optional media files and package metadata. Anki Desktop, AnkiMobile, and AnkiDroid use APKG files to import or export decks.

The database stores notes, cards, fields, tags, deck information, and scheduling data. Card templates can contain HTML, CSS, and references to images or audio, so an APKG is not simply a document with a different filename.

What the HTML format is

HTML is the document format interpreted by web browsers. It stores headings, paragraphs, tables, links, lists, images, and formatting as markup, with optional CSS for presentation.

HTML is suitable for browsing card content without Anki, embedding notes in a website, editing source with a text editor, and preserving readable text in a long-term archive. It does not natively preserve Anki review scheduling, ease values, intervals, suspended-card state, or deck behavior.

How to convert APKG to HTML

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the APKG-to-HTML converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .apkg file and select HTML as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the generated .html file.
  4. Open the result in a browser and verify that special characters, formatting, images, and audio references were retained.

This method requires no installed software and is suitable when the output only needs to present the deck's content as an HTML document.

Using Anki and a local export workflow

  1. Install Anki Desktop and open the deck through File → Import.
  2. Review the imported deck in the Browse window. Anki card templates may generate a front and back from the same note, so decide whether the HTML should contain notes, card faces, or both.
  3. Use File → Export and choose a text-based notes export such as tab-separated text. Enable media export if the dialog provides that option.
  4. Convert the exported fields into an HTML document with a script or document editor. Escape field text as HTML, preserve intended field markup, and copy referenced media into a directory beside the output file.
  5. Open the HTML file locally and check every relative image, audio, and stylesheet path.

For a direct technical extraction, duplicate the APKG first, rename the copy to deck.zip, and extract it. The resulting collection.anki2 file can be read with SQLite tools; media files are stored under numeric filenames and are mapped to their original names by the media metadata file. Generate HTML from the note fields and apply the card template separately if card appearance matters.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • HTML output may contain note content without reproducing Anki's interactive card flipping, cloze behavior, JavaScript, scheduling, or review history.
  • Images and audio can be lost if the conversion exports only database text or if the generated HTML is separated from its media directory.
  • APKG files can contain multiple card templates per note. A converter that exports notes rather than rendered cards may produce fewer HTML entries than the number of cards shown in Anki.
  • Keep the output in UTF-8 to preserve non-Latin characters, mathematical symbols, and emoji.
  • HTML containing Anki template code such as {{Front}} or {{cloze:Text}} is template source, not necessarily the rendered card. View the result in a browser before distributing it.
