What the APKG format is

APKG is Anki’s package format for flashcard collections. An .apkg file can contain decks, note fields, card templates, scheduling data, tags, and associated media such as images or audio. Anki creates APKG files when you export a deck or collection, and Anki imports them when you restore or transfer study material.

APKG is not a conventional word-processing format. Its package commonly contains a SQLite database and packaged media, so Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer cannot open it as a document without first extracting or exporting the notes.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the XML-based word-processing format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and many document-management systems. It supports editable paragraphs, headings, tables, images, page layouts, styles, headers, footers, and comments.

DOCX is the suitable target when Anki content must become a printable handout, an editable revision document, or a file that can be opened without Anki. The conversion usually preserves note text and basic formatting, but it does not preserve Anki’s scheduling behavior, review history, card templates, or interactive study functions.

How to convert APKG to DOCX

Using the online converter

1. Open the APKG-to-DOCX converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Select or drag the .apkg file into the upload area.
3. Choose DOCX as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .docx file and open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.
5. Check headings, tables, special characters, images, and page breaks before distributing or printing the document.

The result is normally a document containing the deck’s note content. A deck with front-and-back card layouts may be represented as fields or repeated question-and-answer sections rather than as Anki-style cards.

Using Anki and LibreOffice for more control

1. Install Anki and open the APKG with File → Import. Confirm that the deck displays correctly and that required media is present.
2. Export the notes with File → Export, select a plain-text or tab-separated notes export, and enable fields or tags if they are needed. Save the result as a file such as anki-notes.txt.
3. Open LibreOffice Writer and use File → Open to import the exported text. In the text-import dialog, select tab separation and the correct character encoding, normally UTF-8.
4. Format the imported fields with headings, tables, or page breaks. Use File → Save As, select Word 2007–365 (*.docx), and save the document.

This desktop method is preferable when the deck needs filtering, field reordering, custom headings, or manual cleanup before DOCX creation. It requires Anki because APKG is a structured package rather than a text file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

APKG stores notes and cards separately. A single note can generate multiple cards through Anki templates, so a conversion may produce fewer entries than the number of cards shown in Anki. Decide whether the DOCX should contain unique notes, card fronts and backs, or one section per generated card.

Rich-text HTML inside Anki fields may convert unevenly. Cloze deletions, LaTeX, custom card-template styling, JavaScript, embedded audio, and review controls generally cannot be reproduced as ordinary DOCX content. Images may need to be extracted or reinserted, and audio will not become playable inline in every word processor.

Keep the original APKG as the authoritative backup. A DOCX contains a readable representation of the study material, not Anki’s scheduling history, ease values, review dates, deck options, or learning state.
