Convert IWA to DOCX

A Pages document may need conversion when a recipient, submission portal, or editing workflow accepts Word files but not Apple’s .pages format. The reliable process converts the complete Pages document to .docx; an extracted .iwa component is not a complete document.

What the IWA format is

.iwa is Apple’s proprietary internal binary format for iWork document data. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote packages distribute text, styles, objects, and other resources across multiple IWA files instead of storing a complete document in one standalone file.

You may see IWA files after inspecting a .pages package, extracting its archive, downloading or recovering it incorrectly, or opening a damaged document. An individual IWA file normally lacks the package structure, metadata, fonts, and media needed to reconstruct the original document. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and web browsers do not provide dependable support for opening it.

What DOCX provides

.docx is a ZIP-based Office Open XML package used by Microsoft Word. Its XML parts can store editable text, tables, images, styles, headers, footers, comments, and other document features, although not every Pages feature has an exact DOCX equivalent.

DOCX is accepted by Microsoft Word and Microsoft 365, LibreOffice, Google Docs, and most document-management or submission systems. It is usually more convenient to share and edit than an Apple-specific Pages package.

Convert the original Pages file on a Mac

1. Locate the complete .pages document. If it appears as a folder or ZIP archive, preserve all of its folders and files; do not extract only an IWA file.
2. Open the document in Apple Pages with File → Open.
3. Choose File → Export To → Word.
4. Confirm the available Word or DOCX options, choose a destination, and save the file.
5. Open the result in the recipient’s version of Word, if possible, and inspect its pagination, images, tables, fonts, headers, and footers.

Convert with Pages on iPhone or iPad

1. Open the complete document in Pages.
2. Open the document menu, usually shown as More (…) → Export → Word.
3. Choose where to save or share the generated .docx file.

Menu names can vary slightly by Pages version, but the export format is Word, not IWA.

Use Pages for iCloud

1. Sign in to iCloud.com with the Apple Account that can access the document.
2. Open Pages, upload the complete .pages file if it is not already in iCloud Drive, and open it in the browser.
3. Use More → Download a Copy → Word to download a .docx copy.

Pages for iCloud is the browser-based option when Pages is unavailable locally. It converts the parent Pages document, not an isolated .iwa file.

Use an online converter

For a nonconfidential document, services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may offer a .pages-to-.docx workflow; confirm that the service currently lists .pages as an input format before uploading. Upload the complete Pages file, select DOCX as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload private, regulated, or commercially sensitive documents unless the service, retention policy, and account meet the required security conditions.

Online services generally cannot convert a raw IWA component because it is neither a complete Pages document nor a supported interchange format.

If only the IWA file remains

There is no generally reliable direct IWA-to-DOCX conversion. Recover the original .pages package from iCloud Drive, a backup, Time Machine, the original device, or the sender. If recovery fails, ask the sender to export the document from Pages as DOCX, PDF, or RTF. Renaming .iwa to .docx changes only the filename and does not convert the file structure.

Quality and compatibility limits

Pages-to-DOCX export can substitute fonts and alter line wrapping, page breaks, text-box placement, complex tables, charts, drawing objects, footnotes, comments, and Apple-specific layout effects. Recheck documents with exact pagination, forms, heavy graphics, or unusual fonts in the Word version used by the recipient; replace unavailable fonts when necessary.
