Convert TMDX to DOCX

A recipient, office workflow, or document-management system may require Microsoft Word format instead of a TextMaker file. Converting the document to DOCX allows broader editing and sharing without requiring SoftMaker TextMaker.

What the TMDX format is

TMDX is the native document format used by SoftMaker TextMaker, the word processor included with SoftMaker Office and FreeOffice. It can store formatted text, styles, tables, images, page layout, headers, footers, fields, and other word-processing content.

TMDX files are created when TextMaker saves a document in its current native format. Microsoft Word does not normally open TMDX files directly, and renaming .tmdx to .docx changes only the filename, not the file structure.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft Word’s XML-based document format. It is a ZIP package containing XML and related resources, and is supported by Microsoft Word, Word for the web, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs import, and many document-management systems.

DOCX supports formatted text, tables, images, styles, headers, footers, comments, tracked changes, and page layout. It is usually more interoperable than a TextMaker-specific format, although different applications can render complex documents differently.

How to convert TMDX to DOCX

1. Open the file in SoftMaker TextMaker, using the same version or a newer version than the one that created it. TextMaker is available through SoftMaker Office and, in supported editions, FreeOffice.
2. Select File → Open and choose the .tmdx file. Do not rename the extension first.
3. Make a backup, then select File → Save As.
4. Choose Word 2007–365 (*.docx) or the equivalent DOCX option in the file-type list, select an output folder, and save.
5. Open the new .docx in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Check page breaks, fonts, tables, images, headers, footers, fields, comments, and tracked changes before sharing or printing it.

Menu names and the displayed DOCX label can vary by TextMaker version. Saving through TextMaker is the preferred method because it reads the native TMDX structure before exporting it.

Online conversion options

Major online converters do not consistently offer TMDX as an input format, so there is no dependable direct web conversion method to recommend. If a service such as CloudConvert or Convertio explicitly lists .tmdx support at the time of use, test it with a non-sensitive copy and verify the resulting DOCX; do not upload confidential documents without checking encryption, retention, deletion, and privacy terms.

If TextMaker is unavailable, first use a trusted desktop installation to export DOCX, then use an online service only for a subsequent format conversion that it explicitly supports.

Quality and compatibility limits

Pagination can change when the destination computer lacks fonts used by the original document. TextMaker-specific fields, macros, advanced drawing objects, revision information, unusual table layouts, and some embedded objects may be simplified or become less editable in DOCX.

Install or substitute missing fonts where licensing permits, and compare the DOCX with the TMDX page by page when exact printing matters. Password-protected or damaged files must open successfully in TextMaker before export; a converter cannot reliably repair a source file that TextMaker cannot read.
