A TEMP file usually comes from a word processor’s recovery or working process, while DOCX is the format required for editing, sharing, and archiving in Microsoft Word and compatible applications. Conversion is possible only when the TEMP file contains recoverable document data; many TEMP files are merely locks or incomplete fragments.

What the TEMP format is

TEMP is not a single standardized document format. A file with a .temp or .tmp extension is normally a temporary working file created by an application such as Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, or another document editor. Programs use these files for autosave data, recovery copies, print preparation, or intermediate editing data.

You may encounter TEMP files after an application crash, an interrupted save, a system restart, or when browsing an application’s temporary or recovery folder. A file named ~$Document.docx is usually a Word lock file, not a copy of the document, and cannot be converted into a complete DOCX file. Some temporary files contain an intact document under the wrong extension; others contain only partial data or application-specific instructions.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the XML-based document format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer, OnlyOffice, Google Docs, and other office software. It stores paragraphs, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, and other document components in a structured ZIP package.

Use DOCX when the file must remain editable, preserve word-processing structure, or work with current versions of Microsoft Word. DOCX is generally more portable and compact than the older DOC format, but exact page layout, fonts, fields, macros, and advanced Word features may change when opened in a different application.

How to convert TEMP to DOCX

Identify the temporary file first

  1. Make a copy of the TEMP file and work on the copy. Do not rename or edit the original recovery file.
  2. Check its size and creation time. A zero-byte file, a very small lock file, or a file created after the document was closed is unlikely to contain the document.
  3. Look in the creating program’s recovery location. In Word, use File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents; recovery files may use .asd rather than .temp. LibreOffice may show recovered documents when it starts after a crash.
  4. Try opening the copy with the application that created it. Choose File → Open and select All files if the extension hides the file. If the program recognizes the content, save it through File → Save As and select Word 2007–365 (*.docx).

Use the built-in online converter

You can upload the file to the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software and choose DOCX as the output format. This works only if the TEMP file contains a recognizable, complete document format; a generic temporary fragment or Word lock file cannot be reconstructed by a converter.

Try LibreOffice when the file has a recognizable document structure

LibreOffice Writer can sometimes open a temporary file whose contents are actually RTF, HTML, XML, or another supported word-processing format. Make a copy, give it the extension matching the detected format, open it in Writer, then use File → Save As and select Word 2007–365 (.docx). On systems with the file utility, inspect the copy with:

file copied-document.temp

Do not rename the file blindly to .docx. Changing an extension does not convert the internal format; it only changes which application tries to open it.

Quality and compatibility limits

A TEMP file may be incomplete because it was written during editing or interrupted while saving. Recovered content can lack the last edits, images, formatting, comments, or embedded objects. After saving as DOCX, inspect pagination, tables, images, fonts, headers, footers, and tracked changes.

If the file is a lock file such as ~$Report.docx, locate the original Report.docx instead. If no original exists, use the creating application’s recovery folder or backup system; a lock file normally contains only session metadata and cannot produce the document.
