What the MMAP format is

MMAP is the native document format used by MindManager, a mind-mapping and visual-planning application. A .mmap file can contain a central topic, branches, relationships, labels, hyperlinks, icons, boundaries, task data, topic notes, and attachments.

People use MMAP files for project plans, meeting maps, brainstorming, process diagrams, structured notes, and task outlines. MMAP is a proprietary map format, not a word-processing format; Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer do not reliably open it as an editable document.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is Microsoft Word’s Office Open XML document format. It stores editable text, headings, tables, images, hyperlinks, comments, page layouts, headers, footers, and tracked revisions. Its broad support in Microsoft Word, Word for the web, LibreOffice Writer, and other office suites makes it more suitable than MMAP for distribution and conventional document editing.

How to convert MMAP to DOCX

MindManager desktop is the preferred conversion tool because it understands the map hierarchy and can turn main topics and subtopics into an outline.

1. Open the .mmap file in a compatible version of MindManager. A file created by a newer release may require an update before it opens correctly.
2. Choose File → Export, then select the Microsoft Word or Word document export option. The wording and location can vary between MindManager editions.
3. Choose the available layout, such as an outline or topics with notes. Enable notes, hyperlinks, task information, or images when those elements are needed in the output.
4. Set the destination and save the exported file as .docx. If the export offers only an older Word format, open the resulting .doc file in Word or LibreOffice Writer and use File → Save As to select a DOCX format.
5. Open the DOCX file and inspect heading levels, indentation, page breaks, tables, images, hyperlinks, and notes before sharing it.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Large maps can produce long documents with awkward page breaks. Apply Word heading styles, correct outline indentation, resize images, and insert page breaks after conversion.
• Attachments and interactive map features are not guaranteed to transfer to DOCX. Keep the original .mmap file when the complete visual map, attachments, or editable map structure must remain available.
• Conversion cannot turn every map element into an equivalent Word object; review the output manually when layout accuracy or complete data retention matters.
