Free online MMAP to ODT converter

An ODT copy lets you edit a MindManager map in LibreOffice Writer or share its contents with software that does not open MMAP files. The conversion normally turns the map hierarchy into a document outline rather than preserving the original free-form canvas.

What the MMAP format is

MMAP is the native document format used by MindManager, a mind-mapping application used for project plans, meeting notes, research outlines, brainstorming, and process diagrams. An MMAP file can contain a central topic, branches, notes, hyperlinks, images, attachments, relationships, task data, and map formatting.

MMAP is proprietary, so ordinary word processors do not reliably open it as an editable document. The exact export options depend on the MindManager version and the features used in the map.

What the ODT format is

ODT is OpenDocument Text, the editable word-processing format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, Collabora Office, and other compatible applications. It stores text, headings, lists, tables, images, hyperlinks, styles, and page settings in an XML-based document package.

ODT is an open, vendor-neutral format suitable for editing and long-term document exchange. Unlike MMAP, it represents content as a paginated document, so it cannot natively reproduce a mind map's spatial layout.

How to convert MMAP to ODT

Desktop method: MindManager and LibreOffice

1. Open the .mmap file in MindManager. Remove or relocate confidential notes, attachments, and links that should not be exported.
2. Choose File → Export → Microsoft Word, or use the equivalent Word export command in your version of MindManager.
3. Choose an outline or document layout. Include notes, hyperlinks, images, or attachments only when they are needed in the word-processing copy.
4. Save the export as map.docx. If Word export is unavailable, export the map as HTML, open the resulting HTML file in LibreOffice Writer, and continue with the save step.
5. Open map.docx in LibreOffice Writer and choose File → Save As. Select ODF Text Document (.odt), leave automatic file-extension selection enabled, and save map.odt.
6. Reopen map.odt in LibreOffice and check heading levels, lists, tables, images, hyperlinks, page breaks, and notes.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The map hierarchy is the most transferable content. Topics usually become headings, paragraphs, or list items, while branch positioning and the original canvas arrangement are flattened into document order.

Boundaries, relationship lines, callouts, map themes, filters, task calculations, custom icons, and other MindManager-specific features may be omitted or converted to plain text. Attachments may become links, remain embedded only in an intermediate export, or be excluded; verify them separately.

Inspect the ODT after conversion, particularly when the map contains nested branches, positioned objects, tables, or extensive notes. For a visual record, keep a PDF or image export of the original map alongside the editable ODT. If Microsoft Word compatibility is required, retain the DOCX export because later ODT-to-DOCX conversion can alter styles, page breaks, tables, and positioned objects.
