What the ENEX format is

ENEX is Evernote's XML-based export format. Evernote creates .enex files when you export individual notes or notebooks through File → Export Notes; the file can contain note titles, rich text, tags, creation dates, links, and embedded resources such as images or attachments.

ENEX is intended for transferring notes between Evernote installations or retaining an Evernote backup. It is not a normal word-processing format, so applications such as LibreOffice Writer generally cannot open it as a document without conversion.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, Collabora Office, and other compatible programs. It stores editable paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, styles, images, and basic page layout in an open, documented format.

ODT is suitable when you need to revise Evernote content outside Evernote, share it with users of different office suites, or retain a document that is less dependent on a proprietary note-taking application. An ODT file normally represents a document, while one ENEX file may contain many separate notes.

How to convert ENEX to ODT

1. Open the ENEX to ODT conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drag the exported .enex file into the upload area.
3. Choose ODT as the output format if it is not selected automatically.
4. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
5. Download the resulting .odt file and open it in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible application.

For a cleaner result, export only the required Evernote notebook or a smaller group of notes before uploading. If the ENEX file contains several notes, check how the converter separates them—typically with headings, page breaks, or sections inside one ODT document.

Quality and compatibility limits

Basic note text, headings, lists, links, and common images usually transfer more reliably than Evernote-specific features. Tags, reminders, note history, notebook hierarchy, saved searches, and application metadata may be omitted because ODT has no direct equivalent for them.

Attachments and embedded resources can also require checking after conversion. Verify images, tables, checklists, internal Evernote links, unusual fonts, and note boundaries in the downloaded ODT before deleting the original .enex backup. A large export containing many notes may produce one long ODT document rather than separate ODT files.
