Free online ABW to ODT converter

AbiWord files may need conversion when a document must be edited in LibreOffice Writer or another application that expects OpenDocument Text. Saving the file as .odt also provides a more suitable format for sharing and long-term editing than the less widely supported .abw format.

What the ABW format is

ABW is AbiWord's native word-processing format. AbiWord is a lightweight, open-source word processor used particularly in Linux environments and older document collections. An ABW file can contain formatted text, styles, tables, images, lists, page settings, headers, and footers.

ABW support is limited in many current word processors. Applications that import it may not reproduce every style, field, embedded object, or layout detail.

What the ODT format is

ODT is OpenDocument Text, an open XML-based document format supported by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, Collabora Office, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications. It is intended for editable word-processing documents rather than fixed-layout output.

ODT normally preserves paragraphs, styles, page layout, tables, images, lists, headers, footers, and footnotes. It is a practical target when the recipient uses OpenDocument software and the file does not depend on Microsoft Word-specific features.

How to convert ABW to ODT

AbiWord provides the most direct local conversion when it can open the source file:

1. Open the .abw file in AbiWord.
2. Choose File → Save As.
3. Select OpenDocument Text or OpenDocument Text (.odt) in the file-type list.
4. Choose a destination, keep or enter a filename ending in .odt, and select Save.
5. Open the saved file in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible editor and inspect its layout.

AbiWord versions with command-line conversion support may also accept abiword --to=odt filename.abw. Command-line options and output behavior differ between releases, so run abiword --help and verify the generated file before using batch conversion.

LibreOffice Writer can be used as an alternative if the installed version includes an AbiWord import filter:

1. Open Writer and choose File → Open.
2. Select the .abw file. If ABW is not listed or the file cannot be imported, use AbiWord or the 101convert.com converter instead.
3. Choose File → Save As.
4. Set the type to ODF Text Document (.odt), leave automatic filename extensions enabled, and save.

Quality and compatibility caveats

Review page breaks, fonts, line wrapping, tables, images, footnotes, headers, footers, lists, and embedded objects after conversion. ABW-specific fields, unsupported formatting, unusual style definitions, and some objects may be altered or omitted by the import filter.

Install the original document's fonts before opening it for conversion; substituted fonts can change pagination and line breaks. Keep the original ABW file because conversion to ODT is not fully reversible. For confidential documents, use AbiWord or another local application instead of uploading the file to an online converter.
