What the ABW format is

ABW is the native document format of AbiWord, a free word processor used mainly on Linux and in lightweight or older desktop environments. How to convert ABW to DOCX

Using LibreOffice Writer

1. Install and open LibreOffice.
2. Open the .abw file in Writer. LibreOffice includes an AbiWord import filter.
3. Select File → Save As.
4. Choose Word 2007–365 (*.docx) as the file type and set a filename ending in .docx.
5. Select Save. If a format-warning dialog appears, choose Use Word 2007–365 Format, not the LibreOffice format.
6. Open the resulting DOCX in the target application and check its layout.

Replace input.abw with the source path and output with an existing destination directory. Quote paths containing spaces, for example soffice --headless --convert-to docx --outdir "Converted Files" "My File.abw". LibreOffice normally derives the output filename from the input filename.
