How to convert pmd to docx file

Older desktop-publishing files often need conversion when Microsoft Word or a current office system must open, edit, share, or archive the publication. Converting to .docx makes the text accessible to current word processors, but it may not preserve the original PageMaker layout.

What the PMD format is

PMD most commonly identifies an Adobe PageMaker publication, particularly from PageMaker 6 or 7. It can contain page dimensions, text frames, linked graphics, styles, master pages, columns, print settings, and other desktop-publishing data used for brochures, newsletters, flyers, and forms.

PMD is a legacy proprietary format. PageMaker was discontinued, and current Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign versions do not provide dependable native support for opening it. The extension is also used by other applications, so identify the program that created an unfamiliar PMD file before choosing a conversion method.

A PMD file may depend on the original PageMaker version, fonts, and separately stored graphics. If those resources are missing, the publication may open with substituted fonts, blank image areas, or altered page breaks.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the XML-based document format used by current Microsoft Word versions and supported by LibreOffice Writer and many document-management systems. It stores editable paragraphs, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, and other word-processing content.

DOCX is suitable when recipients need to revise text, search the document, add comments, or use it in current office software. It is not a full replacement for a desktop-publishing layout: precise text wrapping, multi-column positioning, master-page elements, spot colors, print marks, and linked graphics may be changed or discarded.

Convert the file with 101convert.com

  1. Open the PMD-to-DOCX converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the source .pmd file and select DOCX as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the generated .docx file.
  4. Open the result in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Check fonts, page size, page breaks, columns, images, tables, headers, footers, and text order.

This option does not require PageMaker or other installed software and can be used free on 101convert.com. Do not upload confidential or regulated publications unless the service's privacy and retention terms are acceptable for that file.

Use PageMaker for an intermediate export

If the original PageMaker software is available, use the version that created the publication when possible. Before exporting, install the required fonts and place all linked graphics where PageMaker can find them.

  1. Open the PMD file in Adobe PageMaker and resolve missing-font and missing-link warnings.
  2. For editable text, use the available text or story export command, such as File → Export → Text, and choose RTF when that PageMaker installation offers an RTF-compatible export.
  3. Open the resulting .rtf file in Word or LibreOffice Writer.
  4. Use File → Save As and select Word 2007–365 (*.docx) or the equivalent DOCX option.
  5. Compare the DOCX with the original publication because text export usually loses page composition, graphics placement, and other layout data.

When RTF export is unavailable or layout preservation is more important than editability, export a PDF from PageMaker using File → Export → Adobe PDF or the equivalent PDF command. Microsoft Word can open a PDF and convert it into an editable document; select the PDF in Word's open dialog, allow the conversion, then use File → Save As and choose .docx. This often retains the visible arrangement better than plain-text export, but Word may create text boxes, split paragraphs, misread columns, or place elements inaccurately.

Rebuild the document when necessary

For brochures, newsletters, forms, or other documents with exact positioning, create a new DOCX file and copy the text and images from the PMD file or an exported PDF. Recreate page dimensions, headings, columns, tables, and spacing manually in Word. If the publication only needs to retain its appearance and does not need editable text, keep the exported PDF instead of converting it to DOCX.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • Font substitution changes character widths, line wrapping, page count, and sometimes text appearance. Use the original licensed fonts or approved equivalents before export.
  • Linked graphics are not necessarily embedded in the PMD file. Collect the source publication together with its linked image files before opening or converting it.
  • Master pages, anchored objects, text runarounds, layers, spot colors, trapping settings, bleed information, and printer marks may not survive DOCX conversion.
  • PDF-to-DOCX conversion works best with selectable text. Scanned pages require OCR, and outlined or rasterized text can produce missing characters, incorrect reading order, and editing errors.
  • Retain the original .pmd file and an exported PDF as a visual reference. Review representative pages in the DOCX before distributing or archiving it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PMD to DOCX converter free?

Yes, converting PMD to DOCX on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my PMD file be?

You can upload PMD files up to 1000 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert PMD to DOCX?

No. The PMD to DOCX conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid PMD file for this PMD to DOCX conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Will my PMD page layout stay the same in DOCX?

Not always; complex columns, text frames, master pages, and precisely positioned objects may shift in DOCX. DOCX uses a flowing word-processing layout, so the converted pages may need manual adjustment.

Are PMD text and images editable in DOCX?

Text is generally converted into editable DOCX text, while placed graphics may remain separate objects or be embedded as images rather than becoming editable design elements. Publication-specific features may be flattened or omitted.

Will my PMD fonts be preserved in DOCX?

Only if the same fonts are available during conversion and viewing; otherwise, font substitution can change line breaks, spacing, and page count. Missing fonts are a common reason that text moves or overflows after conversion.

Why is the text order wrong after converting PMD to DOCX?

Text can appear out of order when the PMD publication uses independently positioned frames, columns, or layered objects. The converter must infer a reading order from the page layout, and that order may not match the intended sequence.
