Convert PMD to XLSX

A recipient, reporting system, or office suite may require an Excel workbook instead of a PMD file. Conversion is practical for a PlanMaker spreadsheet, but a PMD created by Adobe PageMaker is a page-layout document and cannot be converted directly into a meaningful spreadsheet.

Identify the file type

The .pmd extension is ambiguous. SoftMaker PlanMaker uses PMD for spreadsheet files; these may contain cells, formulas, charts, and tables. Adobe PageMaker also uses PMD for publication layouts containing text frames, graphics, and pages, not worksheet data. Do not rename the extension: that changes the filename, not the file format.

Check the application that created the file, its file properties, or a copy opened in the original software. A PMD that opens in PlanMaker is the spreadsheet case suitable for XLSX conversion.

What xlsx provides

.xlsx is the Office Open XML workbook format used by Microsoft Excel, Excel for the web, LibreOffice Calc, and many reporting systems. It supports multiple worksheets, formulas, charts, cell formatting, filters, and structured tables, and is generally more interoperable than an application-specific PMD file.

Convert a PlanMaker spreadsheet with PlanMaker

1. Make a backup of the original PMD file and open the copy in the version of PlanMaker that created it, or in a compatible current PlanMaker or FreeOffice PlanMaker installation.
2. Choose File → Save As.
3. Set the file type to Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsx) or the equivalent Excel Workbook (*.xlsx) option, choose a destination, and save.
4. Accept any compatibility warning. If the dialog offers conversion options, retain formulas unless a values-only workbook is specifically required.
5. Open the resulting XLSX in Excel or LibreOffice Calc. Check every worksheet, formula result, date and number format, merged cell, chart, print area, hidden row or column, and external link before distributing it.

PlanMaker is the most reliable option because it understands the PMD structure. A current version may not reproduce every feature from an old file exactly; unsupported objects, specialized formatting, charts, or formulas can be changed or discarded. Recalculate the workbook and compare totals with the original after conversion.

Use an online converter only after checking its input type

Online services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert can be considered only when their current upload page explicitly lists PlanMaker PMD as the input and XLSX as the output. A generic PMD option may refer to Adobe PageMaker rather than PlanMaker and can produce an unusable result. Upload a copy, remove confidential data where possible, and download and verify the output immediately; online services may impose file-size limits or process files on third-party servers.

Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets do not natively open PlanMaker PMD files, so uploading the PMD directly to either service is not a dependable conversion method. If no online service identifies the exact PlanMaker format, use PlanMaker or FreeOffice PlanMaker on a desktop instead.

When the PMD file is from PageMaker

PageMaker PMD is not a spreadsheet and has no direct, lossless PMD-to-XLSX conversion. Open it in Adobe PageMaker, where available, and copy table content into Excel or Calc. For a PDF export, Adobe Acrobat's table or spreadsheet export can extract regular tables; scanned pages require OCR and manual checking. Complex page layouts, text frames, positioned labels, and graphics will not become worksheet cells automatically.

If the source contains only text separated by tabs or commas, export or copy that text into a plain-text or CSV file, then open it in Excel and specify the delimiter, character encoding, decimal separator, and date interpretation during import. Verify columns and numeric values manually.
