Convert PMD to CDR

A print shop or design department may require an editable CorelDRAW file instead of an archived PageMaker publication. Because PageMaker is discontinued and CorelDRAW does not normally open its native documents, the practical route is to export the publication through PDF or EPS and then save the imported result as CDR.

What the PMD format is

PMD commonly identifies an Adobe PageMaker document, especially files created with PageMaker 6.x or 7.x. A PageMaker file can contain page layouts, text frames, master pages, placed graphics, print settings, and references to external fonts and linked images. Archived brochures, newsletters, books, and prepress projects often use this format.

The .pmd extension is also used by MikuMikuDance model files. A MikuMikuDance PMD is a 3D model, not a page-layout document, and cannot be meaningfully converted to CorelDRAW. Check the file's source and open it with the appropriate software before attempting conversion.

What the CDR format is

CDR is CorelDRAW's native document format for vector artwork and page layouts. It can store text, curves, fills, outlines, layers, multiple pages, and CorelDRAW-specific editing data. A print provider, sign shop, embroidery workflow, or design department may request CDR when it needs to modify the artwork rather than receive a finished PDF.

CDR is not a generic interchange format. A CDR created by importing PDF or EPS will not contain the original PageMaker structure, and its compatibility depends on the CorelDRAW version used to create and open it.

How to convert a PageMaker PMD file to CDR

1. Collect the PMD file, all linked graphics, and the fonts used by the publication. Open the document in Adobe PageMaker 7.x, preferably in the legacy environment where it was created. Missing links and fonts can change the layout before export.
2. Check page dimensions, bleeds, image links, overset text, font substitutions, colors, and print settings. Correct these problems before creating an interchange file.
3. Export a PDF with File → Export → Adobe PDF if the PageMaker installation has the required PDF components. Older installations may need Adobe Acrobat Distiller: create a PostScript file from PageMaker, then distill it with a print-oriented job option. Preserve the document's page size, bleed, fonts, color space, and image resolution.
4. If PDF export is unavailable, export EPS with File → Export → EPS. EPS can work well for individual pages or vector artwork, but it may not preserve a complete multi-page publication, interactive features, or every transparency effect.
5. Open CorelDRAW and use File → Import to select the PDF or EPS. Select the required page or pages and review the import settings. Use editable text when the required fonts are installed; convert text to curves when visual fidelity is more important than text editing.
6. Compare the imported pages with the PageMaker output. Check text wrapping, clipped or missing images, transparency, gradients, overprints, spot colors, and page boundaries. Rebuild objects that imported incorrectly instead of assuming the conversion preserved them.
7. Use File → Save As, select CorelDRAW CDR, and choose a version compatible with the recipient's CorelDRAW installation.

CorelDRAW is the most suitable desktop application for the final step because it imports PDF and EPS and writes native CDR files. Adobe PageMaker is the most reliable source application for producing a faithful export, but it is discontinued and may require an old computer or virtual machine. If PageMaker cannot open the file, a legacy-document recovery specialist may be more effective than a generic file converter.

Online conversion options

Online services generally do not provide reliable direct conversion from Adobe PageMaker PMD to native CDR. Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can be tested only when their current format lists explicitly include the exact PageMaker PMD input and CDR output; extension-based acceptance alone does not prove that the file was interpreted correctly. Upload a non-confidential test file, open the result in CorelDRAW, and compare every page before using it for production.

Do not upload confidential publications, client data, or unreleased artwork to an online service. Web converters cannot restore missing fonts or linked images, and they may return a flattened PDF-like result with little editable structure.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• PDF import may split a text line into separate objects, substitute fonts, alter line breaks, or convert text to curves. Keep the original fonts installed and confirm whether the recipient needs editable text.
• Placed bitmap images remain bitmap images. Saving them inside a CDR file does not increase their resolution; check effective DPI at the final output size.
• CMYK values, spot colors, transparency, trapping, and overprint settings can change during PostScript/PDF export and subsequent import. Verify separations and overprints in CorelDRAW before sending the file to press.
• PageMaker features that have no PDF or EPS equivalent, including some layout behavior and print settings, will not become native CorelDRAW objects. Recreate those elements manually when required.
• Saving to an older CDR version can improve recipient compatibility but may remove newer CorelDRAW features. Confirm the target version with the print provider before saving.
