How to convert pmd to txt file

A recipient, text editor, script, or archive system may require plain text instead of a formatted PMD document. Converting the file extracts readable content, but it does not preserve page design or convert a 3D model into a usable model file.

What the PMD format is

PMD is an extension used by unrelated formats. Adobe PageMaker uses .pmd for desktop-publishing documents containing text, images, fonts, and page-layout data. MikuMikuDance uses .pmd for polygon models containing meshes, bones, materials, textures, and related model data. The program that created the file must be identified before conversion.

Opening a binary PMD in a text editor normally produces unreadable characters. That result indicates that the file contains structured binary data; it does not by itself indicate corruption.

What the TXT format is

.txt contains characters and line breaks without page layout, images, fonts, formulas, model geometry, or application-specific metadata. It can be opened by Notepad and other text editors, processed by scripts and command-line tools, and imported by systems that accept plain text.

TXT is suitable for extracting words for searching, editing, scripting, or text-only archiving. It cannot preserve PageMaker positioning, typography, graphics, or a MikuMikuDance model's usable geometry.

How to convert a PMD file to TXT

First determine whether the file is a PageMaker document or a different PMD variant. A file from a desktop-publishing workflow can contain extractable prose; a MikuMikuDance PMD requires model software and usually has no meaningful plain-text equivalent.

  1. Open the PMD conversion tool on 101convert.com, which can be used without installing software.
  2. Upload the .pmd file and select TXT as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .txt file.
  4. Open the result in a text editor and check the characters, paragraph order, line breaks, and encoding.

The online converter may not support every application that uses the PMD extension. If it rejects the file or creates an empty result, use the software that created the file instead.

Extract text from a PageMaker file

Open the document in Adobe PageMaker, select the required text, copy it into a plain-text editor, and save it as filename.txt. If the installed PageMaker version provides a text or RTF export under File → Export, export the content first and then save the result as TXT. Copying text is often preferable when the document contains separate text frames or a layout that does not have a reliable reading order.

If PageMaker is unavailable, an older compatible installation or a converter that specifically supports PageMaker PMD may be required. Keep the original file because TXT cannot retain the document's layout, images, fonts, or editable PageMaker structures.

Handle a MikuMikuDance PMD

A MikuMikuDance PMD is a 3D model rather than a text document. Open it with PMD-compatible software such as PMX Editor or Blender with a suitable import add-on, inspect the required names or metadata, and copy those fields into a text editor before saving as .txt. A text dump can document model data, but it is not a replacement for the original model and cannot preserve its meshes, materials, bones, or animation behavior.

Quality and compatibility limits

Text extraction can omit images, columns, page positions, fonts, formulas, hidden content, and application metadata. PageMaker text may appear in text-frame or object order instead of the visual reading order, and manual line breaks may be added or removed.

TXT has no universal character encoding declared by the extension. Use UTF-8 when an export or save dialog offers an encoding choice; older software may instead produce a system-specific encoding that displays non-Latin characters incorrectly. Verify the output before deleting or archiving the source PMD.
