Convert TNS to TXT

A TI-Nspire document may need conversion when its notes, program code, or data must be edited in a standard text editor, searched by another system, or shared with software that accepts only plain text. Because .tns is a proprietary document container, the reliable method is to open it in compatible TI-Nspire software and copy the required content into a text editor.

What the TNS format is

.tns is the native document format used by Texas Instruments TI-Nspire calculators and desktop applications. Compatible TI-Nspire Student Software, computer-link software, and handhelds can create or open these files; exact product names and support depend on the calculator generation and installed software.

A TNS document can contain multiple pages, including Notes, Calculator, Lists & Spreadsheet, Data & Statistics, Geometry, graphs, and program code. It is a structured, proprietary container rather than a plain-text file. Some older TNS files may have ZIP-like internal structures, but treating the extension as ZIP or extracting its contents does not reliably produce readable text or preserve the document.

Confirm the file's source before proceeding: .tns can have application-specific meanings, and the procedure below applies to TI-Nspire documents.

What the TXT format is

.txt contains unformatted character data that Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, command-line tools, document systems, and import utilities can read without TI-Nspire software.

Plain text is suitable for searchable notes, program listings, and simple data interchange. It cannot retain page layout, graphs, images, interactive controls, mathematical notation, calculator objects, formulas as editable objects, or stored document settings.

How to convert a TNS file to TXT

Copy text from TI-Nspire software

1. Install and open a compatible TI-Nspire desktop application, such as TI-Nspire CX Student Software or the corresponding TI-Nspire CX CAS software. Use a CAS-capable application when the document contains CAS-specific content.
2. Choose File → Open and select the .tns file.
3. Open the page containing the required material. For Notes or program code, click inside the editable text or program editor, select the needed characters with Ctrl+A or Command+A, and copy with Ctrl+C or Command+C. Select only the text object when the page contains several objects.
4. Open Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, Visual Studio Code, or another text editor. Paste with Ctrl+V or Command+V.
5. Save the file as filename.txt. Choose UTF-8 encoding when available, unless the receiving system requires a different encoding.
6. Repeat the process for every relevant page or object. A multi-page TNS document does not automatically become one complete TXT file through a single copy operation.

Convert tables and program code

Lists and Spreadsheet content may paste as columns or tab-separated values, but verify the result in the text editor because formulas, formatting, and calculated-object behavior are not retained. Copy source code from the TI-Nspire program editor rather than from a rendered Calculator result; then check indentation, special characters, line endings, and missing definitions.

Copying a Calculator page generally captures visible expressions or results, not hidden definitions, stored variables, settings, or interactive behavior. TXT cannot represent those calculator-specific features.

Handle graphs, equations, and nonselectable content

Graphs, images, page layout, and visual equation formatting cannot be represented faithfully in TXT. Use File → Export or File → Print to create a PDF or image when visual fidelity matters, and keep that file alongside the TXT copy.

For content that cannot be selected, export or print to PDF and apply OCR. Review the OCR output manually because it can change equation symbols, subscripts, superscripts, variables, minus signs, and decimal separators.

Online converters and compatibility limits

No broadly reliable, official web service converts arbitrary TI-Nspire .tns documents directly to plain TXT. Generic online converters may reject TNS files or interpret them as unknown binary data. Do not upload coursework, answer keys, personal information, or proprietary documents to an unverified service; use TI-Nspire software locally instead.

Renaming document.tns to document.txt changes only the filename. It leaves the original binary container unchanged and does not perform a conversion.

Keep the original .tns file after creating TXT. The text copy is useful for searching and editing, but it cannot restore the original pages, graphs, formulas, settings, or editable TI-Nspire objects.
