Scripts, terminals, databases, and lightweight editors often accept only plain text, while older documents may still be stored as .doc. Converting produces a smaller, widely compatible file, but removes Word formatting and most document structure.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, used before .docx became the default Word format. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice Writer, and other compatible word processors can open and create DOC files.

A DOC file can contain formatted paragraphs, fonts, images, tables, headers, footers, footnotes, comments, tracked changes, fields, and embedded objects. TXT conversion extracts readable character content rather than preserving these document features.

What the TXT format is

.txt contains characters without fonts, colors, page layout, images, tables, or embedded objects. It suits configuration files, logs, scripts, source data, command-line processing, archival copies of readable text, and software that accepts only plain text.

TXT files are small and supported by virtually all operating systems and text editors. The character encoding still matters: UTF-8 is the best general choice because it supports accented characters and non-Latin writing systems.

How to convert a DOC file to TXT

Using Microsoft Word

Open the DOC file in Word.
Choose File → Save As.
Select Plain Text (*.txt) as the file type, choose a destination, and save.
When Word displays the file-conversion or encoding dialog, select UTF-8 unless the receiving application requires a different encoding.
Open the resulting TXT file in a plain-text editor and check character rendering, line breaks, paragraph spacing, and the order of extracted text.

Using LibreOffice Writer

Open the DOC file in LibreOffice Writer.
Choose File → Save As and select Text (.txt) as the file type.
Confirm Use Text Format if LibreOffice asks whether to use the text format.
In the text export options, select UTF-8 and configure paragraph breaks or field handling if the receiving program has specific requirements.
Save and inspect the output in a plain-text editor.

On a system with LibreOffice installed, a basic command-line conversion is:

libreoffice --headless --convert-to txt --outdir output input.doc

This writes input.txt to the output directory. Use the desktop export dialog when a particular encoding or text-export option is required, and test a representative file before converting a large batch.
