A document may need to be submitted to an image-only form, displayed on a device without Word, or shared as a fixed visual page. Converting it to JPEG creates a raster image of each page, so the result is no longer directly editable as a word-processing file.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's binary document format, used primarily by Word 97–2003 and older compatible word processors. DOC files can contain formatted text, tables, images, headers, footers, fields, hyperlinks, and embedded objects. They remain common in legacy archives, email attachments, school records, and business documents created with Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. The newer .docx format replaced DOC as Word's default format, but the two formats are different.

What the JPEG format is

.jpg and .jpeg are equivalent filename extensions for JPEG, a lossy raster-image format. JPEG is widely supported by browsers, phones, document-upload systems, and image editors, and usually produces smaller files than uncompressed formats. It is suitable for rendered pages and photographs, but compression can blur small text and create halos around sharp lines.

A normal JPEG file holds one image, not a multipage document. A DOC with several pages therefore normally produces one JPEG per page. JPEG output does not retain selectable text, Word styles, document structure, hyperlinks, fields, comments, tracked changes, or editable tables.

Convert locally with LibreOffice and Poppler

A local workflow first renders the DOC as PDF, then rasterizes each PDF page. This is preferable when the document contains private information or when repeatable command-line processing is needed.

1. Open the DOC in LibreOffice Writer and check fonts, page breaks, tables, images, headers, and footers.
2. Choose File → Export as PDF and save the result as document.pdf.
3. Run Poppler's pdftoppm utility on the PDF:

The command creates files such as page-1.jpg and page-2.jpg. The -r 200 option sets 200 DPI; use 300 DPI for small print or detailed diagrams, at the cost of larger files. Lower the JPEG quality value to reduce size, but inspect text and line art after conversion.

For batch processing, LibreOffice can create the intermediate PDF without opening its interface:

Run pdftoppm separately on the resulting PDF. LibreOffice, Poppler, and their command-line options vary slightly by operating system, so verify the installed versions if a command is unavailable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion is page rendering, not a document-format transformation. Text becomes pixels and cannot be searched, copied, or edited without OCR. Keep the original DOC or the PDF when selectable text, reliable printing, accessibility, or later editing is required.

JPEG is often a poor choice for forms, screenshots, diagrams, and pages containing fine black text. PNG generally preserves sharp edges and text better, while PDF preserves page dimensions and selectable content. If the receiving system accepts only JPEG, use the highest practical resolution and quality setting.

Missing fonts can change line wrapping and pagination. Fields, tracked changes, unsupported embedded objects, complex tables, and compatibility differences between Word and LibreOffice can also alter the rendered pages. Review every output image against the original before submitting or archiving it.
