How to convert doc to tns file

Word content must be converted when it needs to be opened on a TI-Nspire calculator or in TI-Nspire desktop software. Because TI-Nspire does not provide a standard DOC import that preserves a Word file as an editable document, the practical method is to rebuild the usable content in a new .tns file.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, used mainly before .docx became the default. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice Writer, and older office suites can open or create DOC files. A DOC may contain formatted text, tables, images, headers, footers, fields, tracked changes, and embedded objects.

What the TNS format is

.tns is the proprietary document format used by TI-Nspire handheld calculators and compatible TI-Nspire software. A TNS document can contain Notes, Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, Lists & Spreadsheet, Data & Statistics, and other TI-Nspire-specific pages.

Its main advantage is native compatibility with TI-Nspire hardware and interactive mathematical content. It is not a general-purpose word-processing format, so it cannot preserve all Word pagination, styles, fields, macros, embedded objects, or page-layout features.

How to create a TNS file from DOC content

Use a compatible TI-Nspire desktop application, such as TI-Nspire CX Student Software or TI-Nspire CX II Student Software, together with Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Product names and availability vary by operating system, license, and calculator generation.

  1. Open the DOC file in Word or LibreOffice Writer.
  2. Copy the paragraphs, simple tables, and other content that can be represented in TI-Nspire Notes. For a large or heavily formatted document, first remove unnecessary layout and save a text-only copy with File → Save As → Text.
  3. Open the TI-Nspire desktop software and create a document with File → New Document.
  4. Add a Notes page using Insert → Notes, then paste the copied text. Create additional Notes pages when a document is too long or needs separate sections.
  5. Re-enter mathematical expressions with the TI-Nspire equation editor. Recreate calculations, graphs, geometry, spreadsheets, and lists with their corresponding TI-Nspire page types rather than treating them as Word content.
  6. Export images from Word separately and insert supported image files through the TI-Nspire software's image-insertion command. Check the software's supported image formats and size limits.
  7. Save the document with File → Save As and retain the TI-Nspire document format, using a name such as converted.tns.
  8. Open the saved file again in the desktop software. If it is intended for a calculator, connect the device and use the software's document-transfer function, then test the file on the target calculator.

Online conversion and compatibility

No reputable general-purpose online service reliably converts DOC directly to a usable TNS document. TNS is an application-specific proprietary format, and a service that accepts DOC but does not explicitly support the target TI-Nspire version cannot create a valid result. An online DOC-to-TXT converter may help strip complex formatting, but it produces only intermediate text; it does not perform the TNS conversion.

Copying plain paragraphs usually works, but Word pagination, headers, footers, tracked changes, automatic fields, complex tables, macros, embedded files, advanced typography, and some hyperlinks may be lost. Word equations generally require manual re-entry. Images may need resizing or separate insertion, and interactive Word objects cannot be transferred as equivalent TI-Nspire pages.

Verify the result in the same or a compatible TI-Nspire software version and on the actual calculator. Screen dimensions, available fonts, supported page types, software generation, and calculator memory can affect appearance or prevent a document from opening.

Renaming file.doc to file.tns changes only the filename extension; it does not convert the internal file structure and will not produce a usable TI-Nspire document.
