How to convert xlsx to tns file

A spreadsheet must be converted when its data needs to be opened on a TI-Nspire calculator or in TI-Nspire software, which uses the proprietary .tns document format. The conversion is a data transfer rather than a lossless replacement for an Excel workbook.

What the XLSX format is

.xlsx is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel 2007 and later and supported by LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets, and other spreadsheet applications. A workbook can contain multiple worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, tables, pivot tables, images, and other Excel features. VBA macros are normally stored in the macro-enabled .xlsm format, not standard .xlsx.

XLSX files commonly contain financial tables, laboratory results, school assignments, business-system exports, and other structured data intended for desktop or web spreadsheet software.

What the TNS format is

.tns is the native document format for Texas Instruments TI-Nspire software and handhelds, including TI-Nspire CX and CX II models. A document can contain Calculator, Lists & Spreadsheet, Graphs, Geometry, Data & Statistics, Notes, and programming pages.

The format is useful when spreadsheet data must be calculated, graphed, or viewed on a TI-Nspire device. It can combine data with TI-Nspire formulas and other document pages, but it does not preserve an Excel workbook's complete layout, charts, automation, or formula language. TNS files are not ordinary spreadsheets that can be opened by Excel.

Use the official converter when available

Texas Instruments' legacy TI CellSheet Converter can convert supported Excel workbooks to calculator spreadsheet formats, and some releases list TI-Nspire as an output target. Availability and supported targets vary by release, so verify that the installed version explicitly offers .tns output before relying on it.

  1. Install the converter from a Texas Instruments source and open the XLSX file.
  2. Choose TI-Nspire or .tns as the destination if that option is provided.
  3. Convert the workbook, then open the resulting file in compatible TI-Nspire desktop software.
  4. Check the cells and formulas before transferring the document to the handheld through the software's document-transfer pane.

This route is preferable for a simple worksheet because it can create the calculator document directly, but it is legacy software and may not support newer Excel features or every TI-Nspire model.

Create a TNS document through CSV

Use this method when the official converter is unavailable, does not support the workbook, or produces an unusable document.

  1. Open the workbook in Excel or LibreOffice Calc. Reduce the required data to a rectangular range with consistent columns and, preferably, one header row. Remove merged cells, images, pivot tables, and decorative content.
  2. Save the active worksheet as a UTF-8 CSV file through File → Save As, selecting CSV UTF-8 (*.csv). Excel saves only the active worksheet and writes calculated cell values rather than portable Excel formulas.
  3. Open TI-Nspire CX Student Software, TI-Nspire CX Premium Teacher Software, or another compatible TI-Nspire desktop application and create a new document.
  4. Insert a Lists & Spreadsheet page through Insert → Lists & Spreadsheet.
  5. Use the page's Actions → Import Data command, if present in that software version, and select the CSV file. Set the delimiter and header options to match the exported file.
  6. If import is unavailable or columns are misread, open the CSV in a spreadsheet program, copy the required cells, and paste them into the Lists & Spreadsheet page.
  7. Check dates, decimal separators, missing values, and column types. Recreate calculations with TI-Nspire formulas and add graphs or additional pages manually.
  8. Save the document through File → Save. TI-Nspire software creates the .tns file; transfer it to the handheld using the connected-device pane.

Do not rename an XLSX or CSV file to .tns; changing the extension does not create a valid TI-Nspire document.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • No general-purpose, lossless XLSX-to-TNS conversion exists. TNS documents use TI-Nspire pages, metadata, and calculator-specific formula behavior rather than Excel's workbook model.
  • CSV does not retain formatting, conditional formatting, charts, filters, named ranges, validation rules, comments, pivot tables, macros, or Excel formulas.
  • Excel and TI-Nspire use different formula languages and functions. Re-enter important calculations in TI-Nspire syntax and verify the results.
  • Regional settings can cause comma and decimal conflicts. If all values appear in one column or numbers become text, export with a compatible delimiter and match the locale settings used by TI-Nspire software.
  • Additional worksheets require separate CSV exports and separate TI-Nspire pages or manually combined data.
  • Large worksheets can exceed handheld memory or become slow. Transfer only the rows and columns needed for the calculation.
  • Check the TI-Nspire software and handheld model before transfer. CX and CX II compatibility is generally good, but document features, operating-system versions, and CAS versus non-CAS behavior can differ.
  • Reputable online file-conversion services generally do not generate valid TI-Nspire documents. A generic online converter is unlikely to preserve the required document structure, and uploading confidential XLSX data creates an unnecessary privacy risk.
