Understanding xlsx and txt file formats

XLSX is a spreadsheet file format created by Microsoft Excel, part of the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard. It stores data in cells organized by rows and columns, supporting formulas, charts, and formatting. TXT is a plain text file format containing unformatted text, making it universally readable and lightweight.

Why convert xlsx to txt?

Converting XLSX to TXT is useful for extracting raw data, simplifying data sharing, or importing spreadsheet content into applications that only accept plain text. TXT files are also easier to process with scripts and programming languages.

How to convert xlsx to txt

There are several methods to convert an XLSX file to a TXT file:

  • Microsoft Excel: Open your XLSX file, then use File → Save As and select Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt) as the file type. This will export the active worksheet as a TXT file with tab-separated values.
  • LibreOffice Calc: Open the XLSX file, go to File → Save As, and choose Text CSV (.txt). You can specify the delimiter (tab, comma, etc.) in the export options.
  • Online converters: Websites like Zamzar, Convertio, or Online2PDF allow you to upload an XLSX file and download the converted TXT file. These are convenient for quick conversions without installing software.
  • Command-line tools: For advanced users, tools like Pandoc or csvkit can automate batch conversions and offer more control over formatting.

Best software for xlsx to txt conversion

The most reliable and widely used software for converting XLSX to TXT is Microsoft Excel. It preserves data integrity and allows you to customize the export format. For free alternatives, LibreOffice Calc is highly recommended. For quick, no-installation-needed conversions, Convertio (https://convertio.co/xlsx-txt/) is a user-friendly online tool.

Tips for successful conversion

  • Check your data for special characters or formatting that may not translate well to plain text.
  • Be aware that only the active worksheet is exported when using Excel's Save As function.
  • Review the TXT file after conversion to ensure data alignment and completeness.
