Convert SMM to TXT

Old Samsung Galaxy notes may need conversion when they must be edited, searched, shared, or archived without S Memo. Converting them to TXT preserves readable typed text but removes most note formatting and embedded content.

What the SMM format is

.smm commonly identifies a Samsung S Memo file used by older Galaxy phones and tablets. S Memo files may contain typed text, handwriting, drawings, images, audio, checklists, formatting, timestamps, and other metadata; the exact structure varies by device, Android release, and S Memo version.

SMM is not a universal file standard. The extension can also belong to software unrelated to Samsung, so check the file's original device, backup location, filename, and application before selecting a conversion method. A Samsung SMM file typically comes from an old Galaxy backup, a Kies transfer, an S Memo export, or a recovered Android archive.

What the TXT format is

TXT is plain text: it stores characters without fonts, page layout, colors, handwriting, images, audio, or attachments. Windows Notepad, macOS TextEdit, Linux editors, search tools, scripts, and document applications can open it, making TXT useful for searching, indexing, portability, and long-term storage of note wording.

Save the output as UTF-8 whenever the export application provides an encoding choice. UTF-8 preserves non-Latin scripts and most symbols; choosing an incompatible legacy encoding can corrupt accented characters and other text.

How to convert a Samsung SMM file

When the original device or a compatible backup is available

1. Make an untouched copy of the original .smm file or backup before restoring it.
2. Restore the backup to the Samsung phone or tablet that created it, using the matching S Memo version when possible. Older Samsung Kies installations may restore some legacy device backups; Kies is discontinued and does not reliably handle every S Memo generation. Smart Switch can restore supported Samsung backups, but it is not a universal SMM-to-TXT converter.
3. Open the restored note in S Memo or the Samsung application that imported it. Use Share, Send via, Export, or a similar command, depending on the application version.
4. Send the note text to a plain-text editor, email draft, or document application. Remove unwanted formatting if necessary, then choose Save as and use a filename such as note.txt.
5. Select UTF-8 if the editor offers an encoding setting, then open the saved file in a second editor to verify non-English characters and line breaks.

Menu names differ substantially between S Memo releases. Newer Samsung Notes versions may not import an older S Memo database, so test the restored copy rather than modifying the only original.

When the Samsung device is unavailable

Use a desktop recovery or conversion utility only when it explicitly supports Samsung S Memo and the relevant file or application version. Export the recovered note body from that utility, paste it into a UTF-8-capable editor, and save it as .txt. A database or backup container may require the original application or a version-specific extractor; generic file converters cannot decode proprietary Samsung data reliably.

Do not rename note.smm to note.txt. Renaming changes only the filename extension and does not extract or decode the stored content.

Online converters and privacy

There is no dependable universal online SMM converter because SMM is ambiguous and Samsung memo data can be proprietary, database-based, or bundled with media. Do not upload private notes to a service merely because it accepts the .smm extension. Use an online service only if it explicitly identifies the file as Samsung S Memo, states the supported version, and provides suitable privacy and deletion controls; otherwise, restore or extract the file locally.

What the conversion preserves

A successful text export normally preserves typed note content and may preserve basic line breaks. It usually discards handwriting strokes, sketches, images, audio, colors, fonts, page positions, checkboxes, timestamps, attachments, and other metadata. Export each memo separately when possible to keep readable filenames and prevent unrelated notes from being concatenated.

If the output contains replacement characters, repeat the export with UTF-8 or test the source application's documented legacy encoding. If the file opens as binary data, contains no recognizable Samsung origin, or produces no readable text, identify the program that created the SMM file before using Samsung-specific instructions.
