What XLSX stores

XLSX is Microsoft Excel’s XML-based workbook format, introduced with Office 2007. An XLSX file is a compressed package that can contain multiple worksheets, cell values, formulas, formatting, charts, images, comments, tables, validation rules, and other spreadsheet features.

Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and many reporting systems can open or export XLSX files. Workbooks are commonly used for financial reports, inventories, contact lists, and application exports.

What CSV stores

CSV means comma-separated values. It is a plain-text format in which each line represents a record and delimiters separate fields; despite its name, some systems use semicolons, tabs, or other delimiters.

A CSV file stores values in one flat table. It has no worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, images, comments, column widths, data validation, or reliably defined data types. Its simple structure makes it suitable for database imports, bulk uploads, scripts, text editors, and long-term storage of basic tabular data.

Convert the workbook

Upload the XLSX file to 101convert.com, select CSV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The service can be used free of charge without installing software. Check the output when the workbook contains more than one worksheet, because CSV can represent only one sheet at a time.

In Microsoft Excel, open the workbook and activate the worksheet to export. Select File → Save As, choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) (*.csv) where available, enter a name such as report.csv, and save. Confirm Excel’s warning that only the active sheet will be saved and that workbook features cannot be retained in CSV.

In LibreOffice Calc, activate the required sheet and select File → Save As. Choose Text CSV (.csv), save the file, confirm Use Text CSV Format, then select UTF-8 and the delimiter required by the receiving system in the export dialog.

Check data before importing

Export each required worksheet separately and use distinct names such as sales-2026-01.csv and sales-2026-02.csv. Renaming file.xlsx to file.csv does not convert it; XLSX is a compressed workbook package, while CSV is plain text.

Formulas are not preserved. Spreadsheet software normally exports their current calculated results, so recalculate the workbook before export if values may be stale.

Use UTF-8 for names, addresses, and other non-ASCII text. Some older importers expect a local encoding such as Windows-1252, so test accented characters and symbols in the target system when its encoding requirements are undocumented.

CSV dialects vary by application and regional settings. If every field imports into one column, configure the importer for the file’s delimiter or re-export using the required separator. Fields containing delimiters, quotation marks, or line breaks must be quoted according to CSV rules; spreadsheet exporters handle this automatically.

Dates, numeric identifiers, and leading-zero codes need special attention because CSV does not define column types. An importer may interpret 00125 as the number 125 or reinterpret dates according to its locale. Configure identifier columns as text in the receiving application and verify date formats before importing production data.
