Free online SPV to CSV converter

People convert IBM SPSS .spv output when Excel, a database, script, or reporting system requires plain tabular data. The conversion extracts selected result tables for editing, sharing, or archiving; it does not normally recreate the case-level dataset used to produce those results.

What the SPV format is

.spv is the proprietary Output Viewer format used by IBM SPSS Statistics. It can contain pivot tables, descriptive statistics, regression results, frequencies, charts, warnings, and explanatory text, along with their presentation structure. An SPV file stores analysis output, not necessarily the source observations.

IBM SPSS Statistics is the dependable application for opening an SPV file. The extension is not a universal interchange format, so ordinary spreadsheet software and generic file-conversion services usually cannot interpret it correctly.

What the CSV format is

CSV is plain text containing rows and fields, conventionally separated by commas. Excel, LibreOffice Calc, R, Python, SQL import tools, and many data pipelines can read it. Quoted fields allow labels containing commas, quotation marks, or line breaks.

CSV preserves values and row-and-column relationships, but not SPSS pivot formatting, colors, merged headings, footnotes, charts, significance markers as structured metadata, or the viewer's navigation hierarchy. It also has no reliable built-in data types, formulas, or schema.

Convert an SPV file with IBM SPSS Statistics

1. Open IBM SPSS Statistics and use File → Open → Output to select the .spv file. Menu names can vary slightly by SPSS release.
2. In the Output Viewer, locate the specific pivot table that contains the required values. Charts, titles, warnings, and narrative text do not generally produce useful CSV rows.
3. Select the table and copy it to Excel or LibreOffice Calc. If your SPSS release provides an export command for the selected output object, export the table to an Excel workbook; direct CSV export is not consistently available for SPSS pivot tables.
4. In the spreadsheet application, remove report titles, footnotes, blank spacer rows, repeated headings, and other presentation-only content. Keep one header row if the destination expects a conventional table.
5. Use File → Save As and choose CSV UTF-8 (*.csv) or the equivalent UTF-8 CSV option. If the target system requires another delimiter, choose it during export or save as a text CSV variant.
6. Open the resulting file in a plain-text editor and verify the delimiter, quoted labels, column count, decimal symbols, negative numbers, missing-value markers, dates, and non-ASCII characters.

For a single table, copying only the selected pivot table is usually cleaner than exporting the complete viewer document. Exporting the entire output may include multiple worksheets or report elements that require manual cleanup.

Extract recurring output with OMS

If the analysis can be rerun, use SPSS syntax and the Output Management System (OMS) instead of scraping a finished SPV. OMS can capture selected procedures or table types into structured destinations such as SPSS datasets or XML; SPSS syntax, Python, R, or another data tool can then write the captured data to CSV. This produces consistent columns and avoids depending on visual layout.

Online converters and compatibility limits

No reputable general-purpose online converter should be assumed to parse IBM SPSS .spv files accurately. Online services that accept unrelated spreadsheet or document formats are not substitutes for SPSS Output Viewer support. Uploading SPSS output can expose confidential research, health information, or personal data, so desktop extraction is the appropriate option for sensitive files.

Only information displayed or captured in the SPV output can be extracted. Rounded percentages, suppressed values, truncated labels, selected statistics, and filtered results cannot be restored to their original precision or row-level data. If the source dataset is available, export that dataset directly from SPSS rather than converting the report output.

Check locale settings carefully: a decimal comma can conflict with a comma field separator. Use a compatible delimiter, confirm UTF-8 encoding, and test the CSV in the receiving application before relying on it for analysis or import.
