Free online SXC to CSV converter

A legacy Calc workbook may need conversion when a database import, accounting system, script, or data tool accepts CSV but cannot read .sxc. CSV is also useful when one worksheet must be exchanged as plain text or archived without spreadsheet-specific features.

What the SXC format is

.sxc is the XML-based spreadsheet format used by StarOffice Calc and OpenOffice.org Calc before the ODF-based .ods format became standard. An SXC workbook can contain multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, comments, named ranges, and embedded objects.

LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc can open SXC files. LibreOffice normally saves editable spreadsheets as .ods, so retain the original SXC file if it is needed for an older system.

What the CSV format is

CSV is a plain-text table format: each record is usually one line, and fields are separated by a delimiter. Although commas are common, many systems require semicolons, tabs, or another separator.

A CSV file represents one worksheet only. It cannot retain formulas, cell formatting, charts, images, comments, column widths, named ranges, or workbook metadata; it contains exported cell values or displayed text.

Convert the file

To convert without installing software, upload the .sxc file to 101convert.com, select CSV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Open the downloaded CSV in a text editor or spreadsheet application before importing it into another system.

For local conversion in LibreOffice Calc:

1. Open the SXC workbook with File → Open.
2. Select the worksheet to export. CSV export writes the active sheet only, so export additional sheets as separate files.
3. Choose File → Save As, select Text CSV (.csv) as the file type, and enter a filename such as sales.csv.
4. Accept the warning that the selected format cannot preserve the workbook's features.
5. In the CSV options, select Unicode (UTF-8) unless the receiving system requires another character encoding.
6. Set the field delimiter required by the target system, usually a comma or semicolon, and use a double quote as the text delimiter.

Check compatibility before import

Recalculate the workbook before export if formulas depend on external links or values that may be outdated. CSV does not retain formulas, and recipients receive only the exported results.

Confirm date and number formats with the receiving system. A value such as 03/04/2026 is ambiguous between regional date conventions; use 2026-04-03 where possible. If commas are decimal marks, a semicolon-delimited file is often required.

CSV fields containing delimiters, line breaks, or quotation marks must be quoted. Embedded quotation marks are represented by doubling them, for example "He said ""yes""". Avoid manual edits that remove required quotes or change the file encoding.
