What the SXC format is

SXC is the spreadsheet format used by StarOffice Calc and early OpenOffice.org Calc releases. It can contain worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, and multiple tables, and is most often encountered in older office archives or files created with legacy OpenOffice software.

Modern LibreOffice Calc can usually open SXC files. Spreadsheet formulas and layout are not equivalent to database tables, so they cannot be transferred to ACCDB as database structure without additional decisions.

What the ACCDB format is

ACCDB is Microsoft Access's database format, used by Access 2007 and later. It stores tables, relationships, indexes, queries, forms, reports, macros, and database-specific field definitions.

ACCDB is appropriate when the data must support relational queries, controlled data entry, reports, or integration with Microsoft Access and other software using the Access Database Engine. A spreadsheet worksheet normally becomes one Access table; formulas, visual formatting, charts, and cell-level layout do not become equivalent Access objects.

How to actually convert SXC to ACCDB

Recommended method: LibreOffice Calc and Microsoft Access

1. Open the .sxc file in LibreOffice Calc.
2. Inspect each worksheet and remove title rows, merged cells, subtotal rows, and completely blank columns that should not become database records.
3. Ensure the first row contains unique column names. Use consistent values in each column, such as dates in one format and numbers without currency symbols or thousands separators.
4. For a single worksheet, choose File → Save As, select Text CSV (.csv), and enable the option to save the current sheet. Set the delimiter and text separator to match the data; comma and double quote are common choices.
5. Repeat the export for every worksheet that should become an Access table. Give each CSV a distinct filename.
6. In Microsoft Access, create a blank database with File → New → Blank database.
7. Choose External Data → New Data Source → From File → Text File, select a CSV file, and choose Import the source data into a new table.
8. In the import wizard, select Delimited, specify the delimiter and text qualifier used during export, and confirm that the first row contains field names.
9. Review each field's data type. Set identifier columns to Short Text when leading zeroes must be preserved, set dates to Date/Time only when every value is valid, and use Number or Currency for genuinely numeric values.
10. Choose a primary key or let Access add an AutoNumber key if the spreadsheet has no reliable unique identifier. Finish the import and save the database as .accdb.

For additional worksheets, repeat the Access import and rename the resulting tables. Create relationships under Database Tools → Relationships only after confirming that key values are unique and compatible.

Quality and compatibility limitations

There is no standard one-step semantic conversion from SXC to ACCDB. CSV preserves cell values and basic table structure, but it does not preserve formulas as Access expressions, worksheet formatting, charts, merged cells, multiple-table relationships, or spreadsheet macros.

Export each worksheet separately when it contains independent data sets. If formulas must remain current, reproduce them as Access queries or calculated fields after import; exporting generally stores the displayed result rather than the original spreadsheet formula.

Check dates, decimal separators, encodings, blank values, duplicate records, and leading zeroes after import. For large files or repeated conversions, define the Access field types explicitly and use a staging table before loading cleaned data into production tables.
