How to convert lng to txt file

A text editor, script, import utility, or archive system may require a file ending in .txt even when the source is named .lng. The correct method depends on whether the LNG file contains ordinary text or a proprietary, binary, or application-specific structure.

What the LNG format is

.lng is not a standardized format. It commonly identifies software language or localization files containing translated menus, labels, dialogs, and messages, used by application developers, translators, and end users of localized software. The internal data may be INI-like, XML-based, key/value text, encoded text, compressed data, or a proprietary binary structure.

Determine which program created the file before changing it. Check the application's documentation or installation directory, then open a backup copy in Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. Readable sections indicate a text-based file, but a successful opening does not prove that the source application will accept an edited or renamed copy.

What the TXT format is

.txt normally denotes unformatted character data without application-specific layout, embedded resources, or executable behavior. Plain text is supported by operating systems, editors, scripts, version-control systems, and many import tools.

TXT is useful for searching, inspection, interchange, and archiving, but it does not preserve proprietary metadata, translation-editor features, binary resources, formatting, or behavior that the LNG application expects. Any such information is retained only when it is represented as ordinary text.

How to convert a text-based LNG file

  1. Copy the original file so that the application can still use the untouched LNG version.
  2. Open the copy in Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. Confirm that the content is readable text rather than binary data, compressed data, or extensive replacement characters.
  3. If the bytes are already plain text and the destination only requires a .txt filename, rename or copy the file. On Windows PowerShell, use Copy-Item "labels.lng" "labels.txt"; on macOS or Linux, use cp labels.lng labels.txt. These commands change the filename, not the contents.
  4. If the character encoding must change, use the editor's encoding controls and save as UTF-8, or preserve the source encoding when the receiving program requires it. In Notepad++, use Encoding to select or convert the encoding, then choose File → Save As. In Visual Studio Code, use the encoding indicator in the status bar, select the required encoding, and choose File → Save As.

Do not guess the source encoding. For a file known to be Windows-1252, GNU iconv can create UTF-8 output with iconv -f WINDOWS-1252 -t UTF-8 labels.lng > labels.txt. Replace the source encoding with the actual one; an incorrect choice can damage accented characters and non-Latin scripts.

How to handle a proprietary LNG file

Use the creating application's export function, such as File → Export or Tools → Export translations, when available. Renaming a binary or structured LNG file does not extract its strings and may make the copy unusable in the original program. If no export exists, use a vendor-supplied converter or a parser designed for that specific application's LNG variant.

Online services such as CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar can be considered only if the service explicitly lists the relevant LNG format and the file contains no confidential source code, translations, or customer data. Generic converters cannot reliably identify an undocumented LNG variant from its extension, and many do not support LNG at all. Local conversion with the source application, Notepad++, Visual Studio Code, or iconv avoids uploading the file.

Quality and compatibility checks

After saving, reopen the TXT file and check representative translated strings, line endings, encoding, and any required byte-order mark. Verify placeholders and escape sequences such as %s, {0}, \n, and quotation marks; changing or removing them can break the program or produce incorrect messages.

Keep the original LNG file. UTF-8 handles the widest range of characters, but older software may require Windows-1252, another ANSI code page, UTF-16, or a specific BOM. A TXT copy is suitable for reading or interchange only when the receiving system accepts the resulting encoding and plain-text representation.
