A TI-Nspire calculator or its desktop software requires a .tns document, while the source workbook is often an older Excel .xls file. The practical conversion is to move the worksheet data into a TI-Nspire Lists & Spreadsheet page, then save the resulting document as .tns.
What the XLS format is
.xls is Microsoft Excel’s binary workbook format, used mainly by Excel 97–2003. An XLS file can contain multiple worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, named ranges, macros, and embedded objects. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and Apache OpenOffice Calc can open and create XLS files.
What the TNS format is
.tns is the document format used by Texas Instruments TI-Nspire calculators and TI-Nspire desktop software. A TNS document can contain Lists & Spreadsheet, Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, Notes, Data & Statistics, and other TI-Nspire pages.
Its advantage is native use on a TI-Nspire CX or CX II device and the ability to combine imported data with calculator calculations, graphs, and notes. TNS is not an Excel-compatible spreadsheet format, so it cannot preserve every Excel formula, chart, macro, formatting rule, or embedded object.
How to create a TNS document from XLS data
- Open the XLS file in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc.
- Review each worksheet and identify the rectangular ranges that need to go to the calculator. Remove unnecessary merged cells, blank columns, unsupported formulas, and objects.
- For a small or moderate range, select the cells and copy them to the clipboard. For a larger plain-data range, export the worksheet through File → Save As as
CSV. CSV contains one worksheet per file and does not retain workbook formatting or formulas. - Open the TI-Nspire desktop software that supports the target calculator and create a new document.
- Add a Lists & Spreadsheet page using the software’s insert-page command, then select the first destination cell, normally
A1, and paste the copied cells. - If the installed TI-Nspire version offers an Import Data command in the Lists & Spreadsheet page, use it to select the CSV file. Check the delimiter and decimal-separator options when prompted.
- Inspect column names, text, dates, decimal values, and formulas. Re-enter formulas with TI-Nspire syntax when the original Excel formula is unsupported or behaves differently.
- Save the document with File → Save. TI-Nspire software saves the document as
.tns; transfer it to the calculator through the software or the supported USB connection.
LibreOffice Calc is a suitable desktop alternative when Excel is unavailable. Online services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may convert XLS to CSV as an intermediate step, but they do not create a valid TNS document. Do not upload confidential workbooks to an online service; the final TNS file must be created in TI-Nspire software.
Compatibility and data-quality limits
- Copying cells transfers data and, in some cases, basic formulas; Excel-only functions, VBA macros, external links, pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting, and embedded objects are not converted into equivalent TI-Nspire features.
- CSV import handles one rectangular data set. Export each required worksheet separately and place each data set on its own Lists & Spreadsheet page or in a separate TNS document.
- Excel dates can appear as serial numbers or text after import. Decimal and field separators can also be misinterpreted when the regional settings of Excel, the operating system, and TI-Nspire software differ.
- Verify formulas, units, dates, and numeric precision on the calculator. Recalculate critical results against the original XLS workbook because Excel and TI-Nspire do not implement every function identically.
- Renaming
.xlsto.tnsonly changes the filename extension; it does not convert the workbook or produce a readable TI-Nspire document.

Frequently asked questions
Will my Excel formulas and formatting work after converting XLS to TNS?
Only compatible worksheet data and formulas are expected to transfer; Excel-specific functions, macros, charts, conditional formatting, and some cell formatting may be changed or omitted. Check formulas after conversion because unsupported functions can produce errors or become plain values.
Can an XLS workbook with multiple sheets be converted to one TNS document?
The result is a TI-Nspire document containing imported worksheet data, but the workbook structure may not be preserved exactly. Multiple sheets, named ranges, external links, and workbook-level settings may need to be recreated or checked in the TNS document.
Will the converted TNS file still be editable?
Yes, transferred data can generally be edited in a TI-Nspire Spreadsheet page, but it is no longer an Excel workbook with full XLS editing features. Converting it back will not reliably restore unsupported formulas, formatting, charts, or other workbook features.
Why do dates or numbers sometimes look wrong after converting XLS to TNS?
Dates and numbers can change appearance because Excel and TI-Nspire use different cell formatting and interpretation rules. Values may be imported correctly while their displayed format, decimal settings, or date interpretation needs adjustment.
