TI-Nspire software and calculators use .tns files, while many desktop word processors save documents as .odt. Moving an ODT into a TI-Nspire document usually requires rebuilding the content because TNS is a proprietary interactive-document format, not a standard word-processing format.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used for editable word-processing documents. LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, Collabora Online, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications create ODT files; Microsoft Word and Google Docs can also open or export them.

What the TNS format is

TNS is the native document format for Texas Instruments TI-Nspire software and handheld calculators. A TNS file can contain Notes pages, Calculator pages, Lists & Spreadsheet pages, Data & Statistics pages, Geometry pages, and interactive mathematical objects in one document.

Its advantage is integration with TI-Nspire calculations and handheld hardware rather than general word processing. You want TNS when the destination is TI-Nspire CX Student Software, TI-Nspire CX CAS software, or a compatible TI-Nspire calculator.

How to convert ODT to TNS

There is no standard LibreOffice or Pandoc export to TNS. The reliable method is to create a TNS document and transfer the ODT content into the appropriate TI-Nspire page type.

1. Open the ODT in LibreOffice Writer or another compatible editor. Remove unsupported elements, accept tracked changes, and copy only the content required on the TI-Nspire document.
2. Open TI-Nspire CX Student Software or TI-Nspire CX CAS software and choose File → New Document. Add a Notes page for ordinary paragraphs.
3. Copy text from the ODT and paste it into the Notes page. Reapply headings, bold, lists, and spacing using TI-Nspire's Notes tools.
4. Recreate mathematical expressions with TI-Nspire's equation editor or Calculator page instead of relying on pasted ODT equation objects. Rebuild tables in a Lists & Spreadsheet page when the data must remain usable for calculations.
5. Save the document with File → Save As and use a filename such as converted_document.tns. Connect a compatible calculator and transfer the file through the TI-Nspire software if it must be used on the handheld.
