Free online ODT to DOC converter

A recipient, older Microsoft Word installation, or document-management system may accept only the legacy DOC format. Converting an ODT file preserves an editable version for those workflows, although the original should remain available for recovery.

What the ODT format is

ODT, or OpenDocument Text, is an open standard for editable word-processing documents used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, and other OpenDocument-compatible applications. The format is typically a ZIP-based package containing XML document data and may include styles, tables, images, headers, footers, comments, footnotes, and tracked changes. Recent versions of Microsoft Word can open ODT files, but feature support varies.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word’s older binary document format, associated mainly with Word versions through Word 2003. Its main advantage is compatibility with legacy Word software, older business systems, and devices that do not accept ODT or DOCX. DOC is less suitable than DOCX for modern layouts, embedded objects, and advanced styling, and it is no longer Microsoft’s primary Word format.

How to convert the file

Using LibreOffice Writer

1. Open the .odt file in LibreOffice Writer.
2. Select File → Save As.
3. Choose Word 97–2003 (*.doc) or the equivalent Microsoft Word 97–2003 file type.
4. Set a destination and filename ending in .doc, then select Save.
5. When LibreOffice warns about format limitations, select Use Word 97–2003 Format.

For batch or scripted conversion, use LibreOffice in headless mode:

Create output first if it does not exist. Some installations use soffice instead of libreoffice; replace the executable name accordingly.

Using Microsoft Word

1. Open the ODT file in Word.
2. Select File → Save As.
3. Choose Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc) as the file type.
4. Save the document, close it, and reopen the resulting .doc file to inspect its layout.

Quality and compatibility limits

ODT and legacy DOC store formatting differently, so conversion can alter page breaks, fonts, line wrapping, tables, headers, footers, images, footnotes, fields, comments, tracked changes, and embedded objects. A font unavailable on the conversion computer can change pagination even when all document content is present.

Reopen the converted file in the software used by the recipient and verify headings, tables, images, page numbering, print layout, and tracked changes. Keep the original ODT as the source because unsupported features may be removed or simplified. If the recipient supports current Word versions, DOCX is generally a better target than DOC because it is newer and usually preserves modern formatting more accurately.
