Free online MHT to DOC converter

Some older document systems and office workflows require the binary Word .doc format instead of a web archive. Converting an .mht file also makes captured web content easier to edit, print, and share as a conventional document.

What the MHT format is

MHT, also called MHTML, is a MIME-encoded web archive that stores an HTML page together with captured images, stylesheets, and other resources in one file. Internet Explorer and older versions of Microsoft Word and Outlook commonly created MHT files; browser and document-archiving software may also produce them. MHT is designed for offline viewing and does not preserve a clean, editable Word document structure.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, used primarily by Word 97–2003 and older document-management systems. It supports editable paragraphs, tables, images, headers, footers, and common text formatting, so it is more suitable than MHT for revisions, printing, and systems that do not accept DOCX. Use DOC only when legacy compatibility is required; DOCX is usually preferable for current Word features and smaller, more standardized files.

How to convert MHT to DOC

Microsoft Word

1. Open Word and select File → Open → Browse.
2. Set the file filter to All Files, select the .mht file, and open it. Depending on the Word version, MHT support may be limited or unavailable.
3. Inspect the imported page, including images, tables, links, fonts, page breaks, and margins.
4. Select File → Save As, choose a destination, and set Save as type to Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc).
5. Save the file, close it, and reopen the resulting .doc to verify the layout and embedded images.

LibreOffice Writer

LibreOffice Writer can open some MHT files, but support varies with the archive’s HTML and MIME structure. Select File → Open, choose the .mht file, then use File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 (*.doc). If Writer cannot interpret the archive, try a current desktop version of Word or the built-in converter below.

Quality and compatibility limitations

MHT preserves a rendered web page rather than structured Word content. Conversion can change CSS positioning, fonts, background graphics, forms, navigation elements, table widths, and page breaks. JavaScript, videos, interactive controls, and external resources that were not stored inside the MHT archive generally do not become functional DOC content. Large images may extend beyond the printable area, and long pages may produce unexpected pagination.

For better results, remove unnecessary browser controls before creating the MHT file, use fonts installed on the conversion computer, and check every page after conversion. Keep the original MHT as a backup. If the recipient accepts modern Word formats, save as .docx instead of .doc; choose .doc for software that specifically requires the legacy format.
