What is the adoc to doc conversion, and why do people need it?

The most likely reason someone would be searching for a way to convert an adoc file to a doc is that they received an .adoc file and are unsure how to handle it. They attempt to open the document in Microsoft Word, which is the first program that comes to mind, and it fails, making them look for export or conversion of adoc files.

What are the adoc files?

The .adoc file extension is simply a variation of the .asciidoc extension, often used for the same AsciiDoc content. AsciiDoc is a human-readable document format, semantically similar to Markdown but with a broader feature set suitable for producing more complex content like technical documentation, books, and web pages.

What is Asciidoctor?

Asciidoctor is an open-source text processor and publishing toolchain that adds features and functionalities to AsciiDoc, a plain text markup language, and converts it into various formats. Asciidoctor's main uses are authoring documentation, ebooks, web pages, and other text-based content. Its key features are cross-platform support, rich formatting, extensibility, lightweightness, and speed.

How do I export Asciidoctor files to Microsoft Word?

AsciiDoctor does not export directly to Microsoft Word's document formats (.doc or .docx files). However, it supports export to HTML, EPUB, or PDF files. From these file formats .html file is the most suitable for import to Microsoft Word.

Steps how to convert adoc to html

  1. Download and install Asciidoctor, it's open-source and free download for Windows, Linux and macOS. The GUI might not be the most convenient for users unfamiliar with it, but it should not be difficult to understand it.
  2. Open your .adoc file, use the command-line interface, and input the "asciidoctor -b html xxxx.adoc" command (change xxxx to name of your document) to generate HTML file.

Once you have the .html file, you can open it in Microsoft Word and save it to any suitable format you require, in this case, DOC file format.
