Many report systems produce .jrprint files, while Microsoft Word and older document-management systems may require .doc. Converting the rendered report makes it editable and easier to share, archive, or open on systems that do not support JasperReports.

What the JRPRINT format is

.jrprint is a serialized JasperPrint object created by JasperReports after a report template has been filled with data. It contains the rendered report pages, including text, tables, images, fonts, page breaks, and subreport output. Java applications, JasperReports Server installations, Jaspersoft tools, and reporting workflows commonly create or use these files.

A JRPRINT file is an output document, not the original report design. Converting it to .doc does not recover the .jrxml template, database query, expressions, or editable JasperReports elements.

What the DOC format provides

.doc is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, primarily associated with Word 97–2003. It can be edited in Microsoft Word and remains supported by many older document-management and office systems. Compared with a fixed-layout JRPRINT file, DOC allows users to change text, insert comments, adjust paragraphs, and revise tables after conversion.

DOC is obsolete compared with .docx; it has less reliable support for newer Word features and may produce larger files. Use DOC only when the receiving application specifically requires it. Otherwise, DOCX is normally the better Word format.

Convert JRPRINT to DOC online

Use JasperReports software as a local alternative

JasperReports does not generally provide a modern native exporter for the old binary DOC format. Its standard Word-oriented output is DOCX, while its older editable output is usually RTF. A local workflow is therefore:

1. Load the JRPRINT file in a JasperReports-based application or with the JasperReports Java library.
2. Export it with the JRDocxExporter to create .docx, or with JRRtfExporter to create .rtf.
3. Open the DOCX or RTF file in Microsoft Word.
4. Use File → Save as, select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc), and save the final file.

For a Java implementation, load the serialized object with JasperReports’ JRLoader, pass the resulting JasperPrint to the selected exporter, and write the exporter output to a new file. The exact exporter classes and configuration depend on the JasperReports version.

Quality and compatibility limits

• The conversion operates on rendered pages, so it cannot restore report logic or make the original data source editable.
• Complex tables, nested subreports, overlapping elements, charts, barcodes, transparent images, and precise page positioning may shift in Word.
• Missing fonts can change line wrapping, row heights, pagination, and total page count. Install the fonts used by the report or substitute them deliberately.
• Headers, footers, margins, page breaks, and images should be checked in Word before distribution or printing.
• RTF and DOCX intermediate exports can preserve different features; test both when the report contains complex formatting.
• A DOC file may trigger compatibility mode or warnings in newer Word versions. If the recipient accepts DOCX, export or save as DOCX instead.
