Free online JRPRINT to XLS converter

A JRPRINT file must be converted when a report needs to be opened, filtered, or edited in Microsoft Excel instead of JasperReports. XLS is also useful when a legacy application accepts Excel 97–2003 workbooks but not newer XLSX files.

What the JRPRINT format is

JRPRINT is a serialized JasperPrint report object produced by the JasperReports engine after a report template has been filled with data. JasperReports-based Java applications, JasperReports Server, and reporting workflows using Jaspersoft tools can create it.

The file stores the rendered report pages and their elements, including text, images, lines, styles, page breaks, and positioned objects. It is not the original report template, which normally has a .jrxml extension, and it is not a spreadsheet or database. The original query, parameters, fields, grouping logic, and template design cannot be reconstructed from a JRPRINT file.

What the XLS format is

XLS is Microsoft Excel's binary workbook format for Excel 97–2003. It allows the report output to be opened in Excel-compatible software, where users can sort and filter cells, add formulas, and edit the exported values.

Each XLS worksheet supports a maximum of 65,536 rows and 256 columns. XLSX is normally the better choice for current Excel versions because it supports larger worksheets, but XLS remains useful for legacy software and import systems that specifically require the older format.

For local or automated conversion, use the JasperReports library that created the file or a version compatible with its serialized JasperPrint structure. Load the report, pass it to JRXlsExporter, and write the exporter output to an .xls file.

setOnePagePerSheet(false) places report pages into a continuous worksheet; use true to create a separate worksheet for each page. setDetectCellType(true) lets recognizable numbers and dates be exported as spreadsheet values instead of plain text. Class names and exporter configuration APIs can vary between JasperReports releases, so the code must match the dependency version used by the application.

Quality and compatibility limits

The exporter converts the rendered layout, not the underlying report data model. Text positioned independently on the page may become separate cells, merged cells, or spacer cells, so the result may need cleanup before it can function as a normalized data table.

Images, charts, borders, fonts, repeated headers, page breaks, merged regions, and other layout features may differ from the JRPRINT view. Large reports can exceed the XLS row or column limits or require multiple worksheets. Check formulas, dates, numeric types, encoding, and truncated content after conversion.

JRPRINT files are serialized Java objects. Open files only from trusted sources, and use a compatible JasperReports version; incompatible library versions can fail to deserialize the file. If the recipient does not require XLS, use JasperReports' JRXlsxExporter to produce XLSX instead.
