How to convert sav to doc file

A researcher may need a Word file to submit statistical tables in a report, send a readable extract to someone without SPSS, or meet a system that requires legacy .doc. The conversion creates a document for reading and editing; it does not turn Word into an SPSS analysis dataset.

What the SAV format is

.sav most commonly identifies an IBM SPSS Statistics data file. It stores case data and a variable dictionary, including variable names, labels, value labels, missing-value definitions, measurement levels, and display formats.

SPSS datasets are used in survey research, clinical and social-science studies, market research, and institutional data collections. GNU PSPP can open many SPSS SAV files, but support for SPSS-specific features can differ.

The .sav extension is also used by games and unrelated applications for saved-state files. Confirm that the file opens in SPSS or PSPP before treating it as an SPSS dataset. Renaming .sav to .doc does not convert the file.

What the DOC format is

.doc is Microsoft Word's binary document format for Word 97–2003. It can contain editable text, tables, images, headers, footnotes, and page layout, but it cannot retain SPSS variable definitions, transformations, filters, weighting settings, or analysis syntax.

.docx is the current Word format and is normally a better choice for new files. Use .doc only when a recipient, archival workflow, or upload system specifically requires it.

Convert a data listing on 101convert.com

  1. Upload the SPSS .sav file to 101convert.com.
  2. Select DOC as the output format and start the conversion.
  3. Download the document and open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.
  4. Check column headings, value labels, dates, decimal values, missing-value displays, and non-Latin characters before distributing the file.

This conversion is suitable for a readable data listing or table. It cannot create statistical results that were never generated in SPSS, and a large dataset with many cases or variables can produce an impractical Word table. Do not upload confidential respondent, medical, employee, student, or research data unless external processing is permitted by the applicable data-handling rules.

Export statistical output from SPSS

Use SPSS when the required Word document contains frequencies, crosstabs, regression results, charts, titles, or footnotes. Exporting the Output Viewer preserves the displayed report more reliably than converting the raw dataset.

  1. Open the dataset through File → Open → Data.
  2. Review fields in Variable View and values in Data View; correct labels, date formats, missing-value rules, and display settings before analysis.
  3. Run the required procedures from the Analyze menu. SPSS places tables and charts in the Output Viewer.
  4. In the Output Viewer, select the required objects or output tree, then choose File → Export.
  5. Select the available Word or RTF export type, choose a destination, and export the selected or all output.
  6. If the export is .rtf, open it in Word and use File → Save As → Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc) when a DOC file is mandatory.

For a small raw-data excerpt, select the needed rows and variables in SPSS Data View, copy them, and paste them into a Word table. For wider or larger extracts, first create a filtered subset or summary table; Word is not suitable for maintaining thousands of cases or hundreds of variables.

Quality and compatibility limits

SPSS output is a rendered report in Word, not a rerunnable analysis. Keep the original .sav file and, when reproducibility matters, retain SPSS syntax in an .sps file.

Configure SPSS tables to display descriptive variable labels and value labels where needed; otherwise a recipient may see short variable names or numeric codes such as 1 rather than Yes. Inspect wide tables, page breaks, chart sizes, significance markers, decimal separators, footnotes, fonts, and characters outside the Latin alphabet after export.

Legacy DOC files can alter complex layout when opened in newer Word versions or alternative office suites. Save and validate the final document in the software and version used by its recipient.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SAV to DOC converter free?

Yes, converting SAV to DOC on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my SAV file be?

You can upload SAV files up to 50 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert SAV to DOC?

No. The SAV to DOC conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid SAV file for this SAV to DOC conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Does converting SAV to DOC include the SPSS data file itself?

No, the DOC is an exported report rather than an editable SPSS dataset. It can contain selected tables, charts, and text, but variables, value labels, and analysis settings are not preserved as a working data file.

Will my SAV charts and tables stay editable in DOC?

The text and table contents can usually be edited in Word, while charts may be inserted as graphics instead of native editable chart objects. Statistical formulas and links to the original data are not retained.

Why does my SAV to DOC conversion produce no tables or charts?

A SAV file normally stores the dataset, not the analysis output shown in a results viewer. Tables and charts must be generated from the data and included in the export, so a direct export may produce an empty or incomplete report.

Will the layout change when exporting SAV to DOC?

Yes, wide tables, page breaks, fonts, and chart placement can change during export. Large tables may be split across pages or clipped, so the report usually needs layout checking and editing afterward.
