A legacy Microsoft Works document may need to be sent to a system that accepts only Word 97–2003 .doc files. Conversion also makes an old file easier to open and edit in Word-compatible software without changing the original.

What WPS files are

WPS is most commonly the word-processing document format used by Microsoft Works, a discontinued Windows productivity suite. Microsoft Works documents can contain text formatting, tables, images, headers, footers, and page-layout settings.

The .wps extension is not unique to Microsoft Works. WPS Office and other programs have also used it, and Microsoft Works itself used several format generations. Check which application created the file if it fails to open or the converted result is incorrect.

Do not convert a file by merely renaming filename.wps to filename.doc. Changing the extension does not change the document's internal format.

What DOC files are

DOC is the binary Microsoft Word document format used by Word 97 through Word 2003. It remains useful when a recipient, document-management system, or older application specifically requires .doc.

Many current word processors can open and save DOC files, including Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer. For documents intended for current software, .docx is usually the better editable format because it supports newer Word features; use DOC only when compatibility requirements call for it.

Convert a WPS file to DOC

To convert without installing software, upload the .wps file to the converter on 101convert.com, select DOC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .doc file. Do not upload confidential documents unless the site's handling terms meet your requirements.

Open the downloaded DOC file in a word processor and compare it with the source before sending it. Check page count, headings, tables, images, headers, footers, page breaks, and text near page boundaries.

If Microsoft Works is installed and opens the source document correctly, its own save function can produce the most faithful result:

1. Open the .wps file in Microsoft Works Word Processor.
2. Select File → Save As.
3. Select a Word .doc format, such as Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc); the displayed wording varies by Works version.
4. Save under a new name, such as document-converted.doc, and retain the original WPS file.

Microsoft Word may open some Microsoft Works files through File → Open. Support depends on the Word release, installed import filters, and the specific Works format; current installations may not include or enable a compatible Works converter. If Word opens the file, use File → Save As → Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc).

LibreOffice Writer can also import some Works documents. Open the file, inspect the imported content, then select File → Save As, choose Word 97–2003 (.doc), and confirm the format warning.

Compatibility limits

Conversion quality varies by WPS variant and document complexity. Plain text, paragraph formatting, and simple tables usually transfer well. Floating objects, text boxes, complex tables, unusual fonts, custom page layouts, and manually positioned graphics may move or change appearance.

Missing fonts cause font substitution, which can alter line wrapping, pagination, and table widths. Password-protected, damaged, or incomplete WPS files may need to be opened, repaired, or unlocked in the original software before conversion.

Keep the original .wps file until the DOC file has been checked and accepted. If no current tool opens a particular Works document, a computer with the original compatible Works version may be required.
