How to convert lnk to doc file

A legacy application, recipient, or archive policy may require a .doc file when all you have is a Windows shortcut. The shortcut itself cannot become the document it points to; you must convert its target file or create a Word report of the shortcut’s settings.

What LNK files contain

.lnk is the Windows Shell Link format used for desktop, Start menu, File Explorer, and installer shortcuts. It stores link information such as a target path or shell item identifier, command-line arguments, working directory, icon location, window setting, and limited target metadata; it does not contain a copy of the target document, program, or folder.

A shortcut can point to a document, executable, folder, network resource, or removable-drive location. If its target has been moved, renamed, disconnected, or deleted, the .lnk file cannot restore the target’s contents.

What DOC files are for

.doc is Microsoft Word’s legacy binary document format, associated with Word 97–2003. Current Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer can create and open it. Use DOC only when a receiving system explicitly requires it; .docx is the newer Word format and generally preserves modern Word features better.

A DOC file is useful for an editable record of shortcut settings or for converting the actual linked document when that source document is a supported text format.

Convert the linked document

  1. Do not open an unknown shortcut by double-clicking it. Right-click it and select Properties.
  2. Open Shortcut and inspect Target, Start in, and Arguments. A target ending in .docx, .rtf, or .txt is a document that may be convertible.
  3. Open the target file directly in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. If the target is missing, check the Recycle Bin, backup, OneDrive or other sync history, and the original network or removable location.
  4. In Word, use File → Save As → Browse, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), and save. In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and accept the format warning if required.

A target that is an .exe, folder, or other non-document item has no meaningful document content to convert. Create a descriptive report instead.

Create a DOC report from the shortcut

  1. Open Properties → Shortcut for the LNK file.
  2. Record Target, Arguments, Start in, Description, Shortcut key, Run, and Icon location. Check the General, Details, and Security tabs when file ownership, dates, or permissions matter.
  3. Paste the values into Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer as labeled fields or a table.
  4. Save the report as .doc using the Word or LibreOffice steps above.

For a repeatable report on a trusted Windows system, run this PowerShell command with the shortcut’s full path, then paste the output into Word or LibreOffice:

$s=(New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell).CreateShortcut('C:\Path\example.lnk'); $s | Select-Object TargetPath,Arguments,WorkingDirectory,Description,IconLocation,Hotkey,WindowStyle | Format-List

To save the fields as text first, replace Format-List with Out-File -Encoding utf8 C:\Temp\shortcut-report.txt. Open the resulting text file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as DOC.

Compatibility and security limits

No online service can recover the missing target content from an LNK file. Avoid uploading shortcut files to converters: they can expose internal usernames, server paths, share names, and command-line parameters. Online conversion can be considered only after locating the real, non-sensitive target document; services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar may support common document conversions, but desktop Word or LibreOffice is preferable for confidential files.

Saving to DOC can discard newer Word features, including some comments, embedded objects, modern content controls, and advanced layout settings. Check the saved DOC in the application required by the recipient, and retain the original file plus a DOCX or PDF copy when possible.

Properties inspection does not run the shortcut target, but do not execute an unfamiliar target or copy its arguments into a command prompt. Treat LNK files received unexpectedly as potentially unsafe.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert LNK to DOC directly.
Thus, there is no so-called lnk to doc converter or a free online .lnk to .doc conversion tool.
