How to convert vmg to doc file

A Nokia message archive may need to be edited, printed, or delivered to software that accepts Word files. Converting VMG messages to DOC creates an editable document, but it cannot restore media or formatting that the source file does not contain.

What the VMG format is

VMG is a text-based vMessage format used mainly by older Nokia phones and Nokia PC Suite to store SMS messages. A file can contain the sender, recipient, date, status, character-set information, and message body, with records commonly delimited by BEGIN:VMSG, BEGIN:VBODY, and END:VMSG.

VMG files usually come from a Nokia handset transfer, an extracted Nokia backup, or an old message archive. Although a text editor can display them, the body may contain quoted-printable escapes, encoded Unicode, folded lines, and transport headers that are not suitable for direct copying.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word's binary Word 97–2003 format. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and many document-management systems can open it. Unlike VMG, DOC supports editable paragraphs, page layout, tables, headers, and printing.

Use DOC when the receiving system specifically requires .doc. Use DOCX instead when the receiving system accepts current Word formats; DOC is older and more likely to alter Unicode or layout when opened by modern software.

Direct conversion with a VMG utility

  1. Copy the original .vmg files to a separate folder. Work only on the copies.
  2. Install a VMG-aware desktop utility such as ABC Amber Nokia Converter on Windows. Add an individual file or a folder, select Microsoft Word or DOC as the output format, choose a destination, and start the export. Check the current program documentation because available output formats vary by release.
  3. Open the exported file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Check message order, sender and date fields, line breaks, accented characters, and any non-Latin text before saving the result.

If the messages are inside a Nokia .nbu backup, use a backup extractor such as NbuExplorer, when the backup model and format are supported, to extract the message records first. NbuExplorer extracts data; it is not a general VMG-to-DOC converter.

Manual conversion with LibreOffice

  1. Open a copy of the VMG file in a text editor and locate the VBODY section. Keep the headers if the document must retain metadata; otherwise isolate the message body.
  2. Decode quoted-printable content such as =C3=A9 with a MIME-aware decoder. Also honor the VMG character-set field, which may specify UTF-8, UTF-16, or a legacy encoding. Do not replace equals signs manually.
  3. Save the decoded text as message.txt in UTF-8. For an archive, place each message in a separate section and retain its sender and timestamp.
  4. Open the text file in LibreOffice Writer and select UTF-8 in the import dialog. Confirm the paragraph and line-break settings.
  5. Choose File → Save As, select Word 97–2003 (.doc), and reopen the saved file to check the result. If LibreOffice cannot write the required DOC output correctly, save as RTF or DOCX first, then use Microsoft Word to save as DOC.

For many files, a script or MIME-aware parser can extract each VBODY, decode its character set and quoted-printable content, and produce UTF-8 text before LibreOffice creates the DOC file. Renaming .vmg to .doc does not convert the internal format.

Compatibility and privacy limits

VMG generally stores message data, not word-processing layout. A DOC export can preserve readable text and selected metadata, but it cannot recreate formatting that was never stored. MMS attachments, images, audio, delivery reports, contacts, and phone-specific fields may be absent, stored separately, or ignored by the converter.

Inspect the output for replacement characters, boxes, raw escape sequences, broken line breaks, and incorrect dates. Reopen the DOC in a second application because legacy DOC support can change Unicode text and page layout.

Generic online converters frequently do not recognize VMG or offer reliable DOC output. Because VMG files can contain private conversations, phone numbers, and account details, use an offline converter for confidential archives. Upload a file only to a service that explicitly lists VMG as an input and DOC as an output, and verify the service's retention and deletion policy first.
